This pictorial map by Earnest Dudley Chase, originally published in 1939, shows in glorious detail all of the world's wonders - including the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!
This map includes hundreds of small, highly detailed illustrations of the most amazing things in the world, such as the Colossus of Rhodes, Empire State Building (then the tallest in the world), the Mona Lisa, Niagara Falls... and much more. The level of detail on this one is really quite incredible. Check out Stonehenge at the top!
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn't start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100 inches (254cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the world by Macdonald Gill in 1942.
The details on this map include countries of the world that have unique animals, cultures and landmarks. An example of this is the lip plate that is famous among African tribes that can be seen in Nigeria or the platypus in Australia. Each country also has their main cities highlighted such as Dublin, Madrid, Venice, Bombay and Tokyo (Tokio). Famous natural landmarks such as Fujiyama, Mammoth Cave and Mount Everest are also dotted around the map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who loves to travel or has a keen interest in the historical places of the world.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
