This wonderful old map of Northumberland was originally published in 1801. It was created by John Cary.
Located in the North East of England, Northumberland is one of two counties that border Scotland. It is known for its historic sites and being home to the most castles in England and the world (70 castles still standing!) Alnwick Castle's Gloucester Cathedral was the backdrop of Hogwarts scenes in the Harry Potter films.
Towards the south east of the county, you can see part of the Roman Wall, also known as Hadrian's Wall, which spreads from Haltwhistle all the way across to Newcastle. The wall was built nearly 1700 years after the map was published and was used by the Romans “separate Romans from the barbarians” to the north.
This map looks great at all sizes: 10x10 inches (25x25cm), 12x12in (31x31cm), 14x14 inches (36x36cm), 16x16in (41x41cm), 18x18in (46x46cm), 24x24 inches (61x61cm), 36x36 inches (92x92cm), 45x45 inches (114.5x114.5cm), 50x50 inches (127x127cm) and 60x60 inches (152.5x152.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 60in (152cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x18in (46x46cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Please note the unframed 24x24 inches (61x61cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Northumberland by John Speed in 1611.
The locations on this map include: Newcastle, Hexham, Haltwhistle, Belford, Durham, North Shields, Bellingham and Embleton.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in Northumberland or someone from the county of Northumberland.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
