Rising vertically through the centre of the pale ground, its slender stem carries tiers of fresh green foliage towards clusters of softly modulated purple flowers. The arrangement is disciplined but never rigid: leaves turn in different directions, blossoms gather asymmetrically around the upper stem, and the exposed base gives the specimen a sense of botanical completeness.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for reconciling close scientific observation with exceptional delicacy. This plate belongs to a work associated with the botanical writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, for whom the study of plants offered an accessible form of education grounded in attentive looking. Botanical publications of this kind served both intellectual and aesthetic purposes: they clarified plant structures for the reader while transforming an individual specimen into an elegantly ordered composition.
A closer look
The eye is led upwards from the finely described roots and narrow lower leaves to the broader foliage around the middle of the stem. Redouté differentiates each part through small changes in contour and tone. Fine veins run through the leaves, their edges sharply articulated against the warm, light-beige background; some surfaces appear paler where they catch the light, while others deepen into cooler greens beneath overlapping forms. Delicate hairs along the stem add another degree of observation, easily missed at first glance.
In the upper part of the plate, the plant becomes more animated. The purple flowers vary subtly in shade, from muted lilac to deeper violet, and their defined petals contrast with the firmer shapes of the leaves. Rather than compressing the specimen into a dense mass, Redouté allows pockets of open ground to remain between stems, foliage and flower heads. This negative space preserves the legibility of the plant’s branching structure and gives the crowded upper growth an airy quality.
The composition also balances natural irregularity with formal poise. Leaves alternate around the central axis without becoming mechanically symmetrical, while smaller leaflets and lateral stems prevent the upright format from feeling static. At the lower edge, printed credits identify Redouté on the left and C. Gaudet, marked “Sculp.”, on the right, quietly recording the collaborative production behind the finished plate.
Context and significance
Rousseau’s botanical writing formed part of a broader culture in which classification and direct observation were increasingly presented to non-specialist readers. Redouté’s contribution makes that educational ambition visible. The plant is isolated from habitat and surrounding vegetation, allowing its leaves, stem, flowers and roots to be considered without distraction. Yet the result is more than a diagram: tonal transitions, varied greens and the measured spacing of forms give the specimen presence and grace.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
