Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, pl. 001, created in 1827, centres on a fruiting apricot branch bearing three rounded, golden-yellow fruits. Deep green leaves spread above and behind them, while a slender length of textured wood extends towards the right. The arrangement is both abundant and disciplined: the apricots overlap closely at the heart of the composition, yet the generous pale ground gives every contour room to be read.

The plate belongs to Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, a project devoted to the refined representation of flowers and fruit. Redouté was among the leading botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a period in which close natural observation and decorative elegance were not regarded as opposing aims. His studies offered useful botanical information while also appealing to collectors who valued their grace, clarity and cultivated subject matter. Here, an everyday orchard fruit is treated with the concentration usually reserved for a formal portrait.

A closer look

The three apricots form a compact cluster, but each is subtly differentiated. Their skins shift through warm shades of yellow, with gentle modelling around the curves and minute speckles concentrated near the stems. Highlights are soft rather than glossy, and the shadows beneath the fruit remain restrained. This low-contrast handling allows the forms to appear full and weighty without disturbing the plate’s overall delicacy.

A closer inspection of the foliage reveals an equally attentive study of structure. Fine veins branch across the leaves, their darker greens relieved by paler passages along the central ribs. One leaf reaches into the upper left of the composition, balancing the diagonal movement of the branch on the right; others overlap behind the fruit, creating shallow layers of depth. Small knots and irregularities in the wood prevent the branch from becoming merely a compositional support. At the lower left, the elegant handwritten label “Abricot Peche” identifies the subject while adding a final, finely drawn element to the spacious page.

Redouté’s control is especially evident at the points where fruit, stem and leaf meet. Colour changes gradually around the apricots’ attachments, while their contours remain precise without appearing harsh. The pale background contains no distracting setting or landscape. Instead, negative space isolates the specimen and encourages the eye to move between broad silhouettes—the round fruit, tapering leaves and angular branch—and the much smaller details of speckled skin, leaf veins and bark.

Context and significance

Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a distinctive position between science, horticulture and the decorative arts. Plants needed to be recognisable, their characteristic forms clearly organised, yet publications of this kind were also prized as objects of cultivated taste. Redouté’s particular achievement lay in maintaining both demands at once: his specimens are lucid enough to be studied, but never reduced to diagrams. The careful spacing and poised asymmetry of this apricot branch demonstrate how botanical description could become an art of composition.

The plate also reflects the growing cultural importance of gardens, plant collecting and natural history in early nineteenth-century Europe. Rather than surrounding the fruit with emblems of abundance or a domestic still-life setting, Redouté presents it directly and almost ceremonially. Its appeal lies in that concentration: familiar apricots become a study in rounded volume, branching structure and the quiet variety found within a limited range of yellow and green.
