Two open pink flowers command the centre of the composition, their broad, rounded petals arranged around conspicuous clusters of golden-yellow stamens. A slender stem rises diagonally across the pale ground, balancing the blooms with sprays of richly veined green leaves. The effect is poised rather than rigid: scientifically attentive, yet composed with the rhythm and grace of a flower study.
The illustration comes from La Couronne des Roses, published between 1817 and 1824. Redouté was celebrated for bringing together botanical usefulness and refined flower painting, earning the enduring sobriquet “the Raphael of flowers”. His work belongs to a period in which horticulture, plant classification and the cultivation of ornamental varieties attracted intense interest. Such illustrations allowed gardeners and botanists to examine a plant’s identifying structures while also treating the flower as a subject worthy of sustained aesthetic attention.
A closer look
The two roses appear at slightly different angles, preventing the composition from becoming diagrammatically symmetrical. One bloom opens broadly towards the viewer, exposing its bright centre; the other turns more gently, with overlapping petals creating a shallow cup. Redouté modulates the pink from pale, almost translucent edges to deeper tones where petals fold inward or meet. These restrained tonal changes give the flowers volume without the strong cast shadows of a conventional still life.
Around the blossoms, the foliage provides both structure and contrast. Individual leaflets spread to either side of the central stem, their serrated edges and branching veins rendered with close attention. Some leaves overlap or curl slightly, while darker greens gather towards the lower part of the branch. The variation keeps the plant from appearing flattened into a repeated pattern: each leaflet has its own angle, contour and tonal weight.
The uncluttered background is essential to the plate’s clarity. With no vase, garden setting or surrounding vegetation, the eye can follow the rose from stem to leaf and flower. Fine outlines define the principal forms, while softer, wash-like passages model the petals and foliage. Along the lower edge, the specimen is identified in a delicate serif inscription as “Rosa Gallica rosea flore simplici” and “Rosier de Provinsi à fleurs roses et simples”; the inscription “P. J. Redouté del.” records Redouté as the draughtsman.
Context and significance
Redouté’s particular achievement lay in preserving the legibility expected of botanical illustration without sacrificing compositional beauty. Here, the exposed stamens, leaf serrations and vein patterns provide descriptive information, but they are organised into a carefully judged ascent across the page. The diagonal stem gives the study movement, while the open space surrounding it grants each detail unusual prominence.
The Gallic rose was thus presented not merely as a decorative bloom but as an object of close observation. Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
