A fully opened bloom occupies the upper centre, its densely layered pink petals accompanied by two compact buds and a curving stem of serrated leaves. Against the almost unmarked pale ground, every contour remains distinct: the unfurling petal edges, pointed green sepals and delicate veins of the foliage are presented with equal clarity.
The study belongs to Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century work on roses, published as Les Roses between 1817 and 1824. Working in France, Redouté brought together close botanical observation and the cultivated elegance expected of flower painting in courtly and aristocratic circles. His illustrations emerged at a time of intense European interest in collecting, naming and classifying plants, yet they were never merely functional records. In his hands, a botanical specimen also became an exceptionally poised composition, scientifically legible without losing its decorative grace.
A closer look
The open rose is constructed through subtle tonal transitions rather than emphatic outlines. Pale pink gathers towards the folded interior, while deeper rose tones collect along overlapping edges and in the narrow recesses between petals. These shifts give the bloom a convincing weight and volume. Its irregular perimeter is equally important: individual petals curl, dip and flare in slightly different directions, preventing the flower from settling into rigid symmetry.
On either side, the unopened buds introduce firmer, more angular forms. Their reddish petals are held within pointed green sepals, offering a concise account of the flower at an earlier stage of growth. The arrangement therefore has an almost sequential quality, setting tightly enclosed buds beside the expansive mature bloom. Below, the stem bends gently through the composition rather than descending in a straight botanical diagram. Branching leaves counterbalance the flower above, their saw-toothed margins and clearly articulated veins rendered in varied greens.
Small details reward close attention. Fine hairs and slight thorn-like projections appear along the stem, while the leaves overlap one another to create shallow pockets of shadow. Highlights across the petals soften their surface, in contrast to the more sharply described foliage. The generous negative space surrounding the plant performs a practical and aesthetic role: it isolates the specimen for examination while making the arching stem and asymmetrical distribution of leaves especially easy to appreciate.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
