A thorned stem rises through dense, serrated foliage towards a loose gathering of soft pink flowers, their yellow centres providing small points of warmth. Set apart against a pale, almost empty ground, every leaf, bud and prickle remains clearly legible, while the plant’s slightly asymmetrical growth keeps the arrangement natural rather than diagrammatic.
Redouté was renowned for reconciling scientific clarity with unusual delicacy, earning the enduring sobriquet ‘the Raphael of flowers’. This study belongs to his celebrated early nineteenth-century florilegium work, produced at a time when botanical classification and horticultural collecting were flourishing alongside an appetite for natural-history images as objects of aesthetic pleasure. The rose was therefore not treated merely as an ornamental bloom: its stems, leaves and stages of flowering were recorded as carefully as the open blossoms.
A closer look
The composition is anchored by the substantial central stems, whose projecting thorns are conspicuous enough to explain the title’s emphasis on the plant’s exceptionally prickly character. From this firm structure, compound leaves spread laterally across the lower half of the plate. Their sharply toothed edges are crisply articulated, while fine veins and stippled tonal variations distinguish leaves turned towards the light from those held in greater shade.
Above, the visual texture changes. The leaves are controlled and precise, but the petals unfold in softer transitions of blush pink, with highlights giving them a gently folded, almost translucent appearance. Open flowers occupy the upper central area, balanced by smaller buds towards the right. This progression from closed bud to full bloom quietly conveys the plant’s life cycle without disturbing the clarity of the specimen. The yellow stamens at each centre form vivid accents amid the cooler greens and pinks.
Negative space is essential to the plate’s effect. Rather than placing the rose in a garden setting, Redouté isolates its branching silhouette, allowing the eye to follow each offshoot and overlap. At the lower edge, the French label ‘Roser rouillé très épineux’ identifies the subject as a very thorny form of the sweet briar or ‘rusty rose’. The restrained lettering remains subordinate to the specimen, preserving the airy balance of the page.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period occupied a productive space between science and the decorative arts. Accurate distinctions in foliage, stem and flower mattered to botanists and gardeners, yet the finest plates were also admired for their compositional refinement. Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
