Her pale face emerges against a circular field of glowing orange, while long strands of hair stream through the composition in supple, closely controlled curves. Large earrings, ornate headwear and a fan-like collar turn the portrait into an intricate decorative ensemble rather than a conventional likeness.
Mucha was one of the defining figures of Art Nouveau and helped establish its distinctive visual language across posters, illustration and architectural decoration. His association with the Parisian jeweller Georges Fouquet offered a particularly fitting meeting of graphic art, luxury craftsmanship and commercial display. Here, the familiar elegance of Mucha’s female figures is adapted to a design conceived for a shop façade: an environment in which ornament could become part of the architecture itself. The work belongs to the broader Belle Époque ambition to dissolve boundaries between fine art, design and everyday surroundings.
A closer look
The woman’s profile sits slightly to the left of centre, leaving the strongest expanse of orange to open around her face on the right. This asymmetry gives the design a gentle directional pull: her sideways gaze leads across the warm circular ground, while the mass of her hair curves back towards the opposite edge. Defined contours keep the principal forms distinct, but the transitions within the orange field are softer, lightening towards its perimeter and creating a sense of luminosity appropriate to a glass-panel conception.
Much of the visual richness is concentrated around the head and neckline. Near the upper left, the headdress gathers into a complex cluster of curved and ornamental forms. Below, the oversized circular earrings echo the larger disc behind the figure, establishing a rhythm of nested round shapes. At the lower edge, the collar spreads out like a fan, divided into coloured segments that punctuate the otherwise restrained flesh, beige and pink tones. These details suggest jewellery without reducing it to a precise inventory; ornament is absorbed into the total pattern.
The hair is especially characteristic of Mucha’s decorative method. Fine, parallel lines follow its movement, giving individual locks both volume and graphic clarity. Rather than describing deep pictorial space, the design builds its effect through overlapping silhouettes, flat colour and emphatic contour. The woman, her adornments and the circular background consequently read as a unified surface—intimate in subject, yet bold enough to function within an architectural setting.
Context and significance
Although Mucha remains most closely associated with his celebrated posters, his practice extended well beyond printed publicity. He applied the same vocabulary of rhythmic line, stylised natural form and richly dressed female figures to books, jewellery, furnishings and interiors. The Fouquet project demonstrates how readily that language could move between disciplines. In the context of a luxury boutique, the female profile also served as an ideal vehicle for displaying the relationship between beauty, adornment and modern design.
The circular framing is central to the work’s continuing visual force. It contains an abundance of detail without allowing the composition to become diffuse, while the saturated orange gives the figure the appearance of being held within a halo of coloured light. The result combines the immediate clarity of graphic art with the elaborate surface pleasures of Art Nouveau—a particularly concentrated expression of Mucha’s ability to make figure, pattern and architectural ornament operate as one.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
