Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s 1846 Oregon and Upper California captures the American West at the instant it was being argued over, surveyed, and imagined. Rendered with full hand coloring and expressive hachures, the map frames a sweeping panorama from the Columbia River to the Gulf of California, anchored to prime meridians from both Greenwich and Washington to serve transatlantic readers. Issued at the threshold of the Oregon Treaty and the opening campaigns of the Mexican–American War, it distills the rhetoric of exploration and settlement into a precise cartographic statement. Notably, in some early atlas issues the sheet is absent from the printed contents—a telling sign of fast-moving events and Mitchell’s drive to include the latest intelligence, making this an essential document for understanding 1840s geopolitics.

In the north, Oregon is articulated through waterways that defined travel and commerce: the Columbia River, the Willamette and its burgeoning Oregon City, and Fort Vancouver—an anchor of Hudson’s Bay Company influence and the Oregon Trail’s terminus culture. Distinct color borders express newly clarified jurisdictions following the 1846 boundary settlement, while place-names and tribal annotations record a lived geography that predated American territorial administration. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights imparts the formidable reality of the Cascades and coastal ranges, translating romantic notions of the Pacific Northwest into tangible gradients, fords, and passes—precisely the information emigrants, traders, and policymakers sought as the region transformed from claim to community.

Southward, Mitchell presents “Upper California” at the threshold of war and dramatic change. San Francisco, then a modest settlement on a spectacular bay, shares the sheet with San Diego, the Sacramento Valley, and the snow-bound mass of Mount Shasta and the Sierra “Nevada”—here the mountain range rather than a future state. The Rio Grande’s headwaters and the Gulf of California frame a borderland still under Mexican sovereignty, even as U.S. naval and overland campaigns began to reshape it. The map fixes the pre-Gold Rush landscape in amber: Sacramento appears as a riverine point on a fertile plain, poised for the boom that would follow 1848, while San Bernardino marks the southern corridor linking interior deserts to the coast.

Mitchell’s handling of the Great Interior Basin reflects the latest insights from the Fremont expeditions. The Humboldt River threads westward only to vanish into sinks, while Salt Lake and the surrounding basin are carefully distinguished as endorheic—a striking departure from earlier speculative cartography. Spot heights and hachuring convey why overland routes bent toward water and why mountain barriers dictated strategy, settlement, and survival. To the southeast, Santa Fe and Chihuahua anchor long-standing trade arteries that would be redrawn by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. These interconnected notes, rivers, and passes transform the sheet into a narrative of movement—of emigrants, soldiers, and merchants—etched across a vast interior.

Equally compelling are the cultural and ethnographic annotations. Mitchell records the locations of Indigenous tribes across Oregon and Upper California, preserving names and regions that structured life long before American or Mexican boundary lines. This acknowledgment of existing nations, set amid a clear scale and legend, invites a layered reading: political claims in one register, ancestral geographies in another. Geographical notes and inset-style callouts guide the eye from the Columbia’s confluence to the Gulf’s tides, while dual prime meridians situate the West within both American and European frames of reference. As a cartographic artifact, the map unites artistry and authority; as a historical witness, it illuminates a continent on the cusp of irreversible change.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
