This wonderful old map of Lower East Side & Two Bridges neighbourhoods of Manhattan was originally published in 1874. It was created by John Bute Holmes.
This map covers what is now known as the Lower East Side and Two Bridges in New York City. But, if that wasn't interesting enough, the map also shows the farmland that the neighbourhoods were built upon.
It is a little hard to believe today, but at the start of the 19th century most of Manhattan was still farmland. Here, the map shows that in 1784 the Lower East Side was Rutger's Farm, which was owned by Hendrick Rutger, a United States philanthropist and war hero. The map even shows how Rutger partitioned the land for his four children.
This map runs roughly from Catherine Street on the left (in central Two Bridges), to Montgomery St on the right. Division St and East Broadway are at the top - and of course the East River is at the bottom.
This map looks great at all sizes: 18x11in (45x27cm), 24x13 inches (60x33cm), 36x20 inches (90x50cm), 40x22 inches (100x55cm), 50x27 inches (125x70cm), 60x32 inches (152.5x81.5cm) and 70x38 inches (178x96.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 150in (380cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (61x91.5cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Please note the unframed 18x11in (45x27cm), 24x13 inches (60x33cm) and 36x20 inches (90x50cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of New York City and Manhattan by W.B. Clarke in 1840.
The locations on this map include: East River, Montgomery Street, Clinton Street, Jefferson Street, Monroe Street, Madison Street, Market Street, Catherine Street and Cherry Street.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in Lower East Side & Two Bridges neighbourhoods of Manhattan or the intriguing history of this ancient Manhattan neighbourhood.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
