Size guide

Map size guide

Maps with intricate detail are best enjoyed at larger sizes, giving smaller place names and features more room to be appreciated. Each map is made to order, so custom sizing is also available: select 'custom size' on the product page and enter your dimensions, or add them to your order notes at checkout.

Your map fills the entire sheet, with no additional white border. The design is presented as shown in the product images. To request extra space around the map, please contact us or leave a note with your order.

Compare a selection of our standard sizes below, shown in landscape and portrait orientation.

Unique Maps size guide landscape

Framed maps

Our standard frames add approximately 2cm (0.75in) on each side. For example, a 45x60cm map measures around 49x64cm including its frame, while a 24x36in map measures around 25.5x37.5in. Allow for these outer dimensions when measuring your wall space.

Maps over 125cm/50in usually have wider frames. For a particular frame width or style, explore our custom framing options.

Unframed maps

Planning to frame your map yourself? The guidance below will help you choose the right fit, particularly for larger maps and less conventional sizes.

Choosing a frame that fits

Use the dimensions listed for your chosen map to select a frame. Look for the size of artwork the frame holds, rather than the frame's outer dimensions.

For example, an 18x24 inch map needs a frame that 'fits artwork' measuring 18x24 inches. For a 60x90cm map, choose a frame that fits 60x90cm artwork.

For unusual sizes, such as 24x11 inches (61x29cm), we recommend waiting until your map arrives before ordering a frame. Dimensions can vary by a few millimetres, so measuring the print first will help ensure a good fit.

For a map that needs to fit exact dimensions in centimetres or inches, please contact us. Custom sizing is available at no additional charge for maps over 50in/125cm.

Framing larger maps

Before ordering a separate frame for a large map, wait until your print arrives and measure it. This gives you the dimensions you need to choose a frame with confidence.

If you are using a local framer, take the map with you so they can measure it and make the frame to fit.

Careful mounting helps larger maps lie flat and reduces the risk of rippling. For a professionally finished piece, we would be happy to frame your map for you.

Titled “Duxbury,” this U.S. Geological Survey topographical map was dated 1918 and published with a 1921 imprint, capturing a South Shore Massachusetts landscape at a moment when older maritime settlements were beginning to meet the modern age of roads, rail connections, and expanding coastal development. At a scale of 1:62,500, it presents Duxbury, Scituate, Kingston, Greenbush, South Duxbury, and neighboring communities with the disciplined clarity associated with early twentieth-century federal mapping. The sheet balances scientific precision with quiet visual elegance: landforms are articulated by contour lines, waterways and bays are carefully distinguished, and the indented shoreline is rendered with a meticulousness that reflects both navigational importance and geographic complexity. It is a compelling portrait of coastal Massachusetts before a century of suburban transformation.

The mapmaker, the U.S. Geological Survey, brought to this work the authority of one of the nation’s most important scientific institutions. Established in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became central to the systematic mapping of the United States, producing quadrangle maps that served engineers, planners, naturalists, educators, and the general public. This “Duxbury” sheet belongs to that tradition of practical yet beautifully ordered topographic cartography, where every road, contour, inlet, marsh, and settlement contributes to a larger understanding of place. The USGS style is deliberately restrained: lettering is legible, symbols are standardized, and color is used functionally to separate land, water, and terrain. The result is not decorative excess, but a refined cartographic language in which precision itself becomes aesthetically satisfying.

Duxbury Bay and Kingston Harbor dominate the geography of the sheet, their sheltered waters shaping the towns and routes clustered around them. Duxbury, long associated with early colonial settlement, shipbuilding, and coastal agriculture, appears here as a town still closely tied to its harbor, beaches, and peninsulas. Powder Point, Cedar Point, Hobart’s Landing, and South Duxbury evoke a shoreline world of landings, tidal flats, and maritime movement. Kingston, just inland from the harbor, anchors the western portion of the mapped area, while features such as Pudding Hill and Little Pine Island reveal the subtle interplay of upland and wetland terrain. The map’s contouring makes clear that this is not a flat coast, but a varied landscape of low hills, bays, points, marshes, and protected waters.

To the north and east, Scituate and Greenbush introduce another richly maritime landscape, one defined by harbors, lights, and exposure to the Atlantic. Scituate Light is a particularly evocative landmark, recalling the town’s seafaring history and the importance of coastal beacons along Massachusetts Bay. Farther offshore or along the outer approaches, names such as Graves Light, Gurnet Point, Clark’s Island, and Manomet Point situate the map within a broader nautical geography stretching toward Plymouth Bay and the open sea. These places carry deep historical resonance: Clark’s Island is linked to early Pilgrim history, while Gurnet Point and Manomet Point mark commanding coastal positions. The map thus reads as both a land survey and a maritime document, charting communities whose histories were shaped by tides, trade, fishing, and navigation.

As a historical artifact, the “Duxbury” map preserves a landscape on the threshold of change. The early twentieth century South Shore shown here predates much of the later residential expansion, highway development, and intensification of coastal land use that would reshape Duxbury, Scituate, Kingston, and their surroundings. Roads, settlements, shorelines, and named localities appear in a form that invites comparison with the present, revealing what has endured and what has disappeared. The careful depiction of elevation, water bodies, and human infrastructure makes the map especially valuable for understanding how terrain guided settlement patterns and transportation corridors. Its quiet precision captures more than geography: it records a coastal region of historic towns, working shores, and natural contours before the full imprint of modern suburban Massachusetts had taken hold.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Many of our maps and art prints are chosen as thoughtful gifts for homes, offices, studies and meaningful places.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
