The open cluster, located in the constellation Carina some 20,000 light years from Earth, gathers around the centre of the frame as a dense field of brilliant white and blue stars, set against deep black and layered veils of colour.
The central cluster is the image’s unmistakable focus, yet the surrounding regions give it much of its visual depth. Cool blue luminosity spreads into the darker outer field, while warmer red, orange and soft beige areas emerge around the edges. Near the upper left, a conspicuous red point stands apart from the predominantly blue stellar light; towards the lower right, a diffuse orange glow softens the darkness.
At large scale, the crowded centre resolves into scores of distinct points, some sharp and compact, others surrounded by streaks of radiance. The impression is not of a flat star field but of overlapping layers: concentrated brilliance in the foreground of the composition, quieter points receding into blackness, and faint cloud-like forms suspended between them.
A closer look
Around the heart of NGC 3603, small blue-white stars are packed so closely that their light appears almost continuous from a distance. Viewed more closely, this brightness breaks into individual sources with subtle differences in colour and intensity. Several of the most prominent stars carry fine rays of light, adding a crisp, geometric counterpoint to the softer structures around them.
The outer field is more restrained. Along the upper right, pale wisps and faint streaks cross areas of near-black, while a narrow blue filament reaches towards the upper edge on the opposite side. To the right of the central gathering, a dim arc can be traced against the dark background—easy to overlook at first, but especially effective in a large reproduction.
Along the lower edge, the image shifts again. Deep blue gives way to delicate traces of warmer light, and the lower-right region contains a loose scattering of faint stars touched by an orange halo. These quieter passages balance the intensity of the centre, allowing the cluster’s brilliance to stand out without overwhelming the finer detail surrounding it.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
