A wonderful and rare pictorial view of New York City advertising the World's Fair that was held in 1939 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The map shows Manhattan in the background, and a number of subway, railway and other transit links to the fair in the foreground.
The 1939 World's Fair was obviously overshadowed by the start of World War 2. But still, it was a massive affair - one of the largest world's fairs ever put on. Interestingly, it was also the first fair to be focused on the future, with the marketing slogans of "Dawn of a New Day" and offering visitors a look at "the world of tomorrow."
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100 inches (254cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting map of New York by Ohman Map Co. in 1927.
Some of the locations you can see on this map include: New Jersey, Bronx, Manhattan, Long Island City, East River and Hudson River.
On the map you can see the different areas of the World's Fair such as the Amusement Area, the many parking spots, Continental Avenue, Rainbow Avenue, Constitution Mall, Court of Power and the Administration Gate.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from New York or perhaps someone who has been there on holiday.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
