Produced by Imp. Camis in 1892, Fine d’Algérie, eau-de-vie de vin. Produit de la distillation des vins d’Algérie advertises Debeauchamp’s Algerian wine brandy through an exuberant alliance of product illustration and display lettering. A tall glass bottle occupies the left side of the composition, while the words “FINE D’ALGÉRIE” spread across the upper field in emphatic red. Against a warm yellow and creamy off-white ground, further lettering in blue, red and brown turns practical information into a densely orchestrated graphic display.

The poster belongs to the expanding commercial culture of late nineteenth-century France, when vividly designed advertising helped branded goods command attention in increasingly crowded public spaces. Its appeal to Algeria also carries a specific historical charge. In 1892 Algeria was under French colonial rule, and agricultural products from the territory circulated through commercial networks linking North Africa and metropolitan France. Here, the geographical designation is not incidental: “d’Algérie” is made one of the largest and most memorable elements, presenting origin itself as a marker of distinction, productivity and modern trade.

A closer look

The bottle provides the composition with its principal vertical axis, but it is placed off-centre rather than treated as a static emblem. Subtle highlights and shadows lend the glass a degree of volume that contrasts with the broadly flat colour surrounding it. Its decorative label rewards closer attention: compact lettering, a small emblem and star-like motifs condense the brand identity into a miniature design within the larger poster.

Typography carries as much visual weight as the bottle. The main red title is immediately legible at a distance, while “EAU-DE-VIE DE VIN” establishes the nature of the drink beneath it. The name “DEBEAUCHAMP”, rendered in blue near the bottle, introduces a cool counterpoint to the dominant reds and yellows. From there, the eye moves through smaller blocks of information arranged in changing sizes and styles. Rather than presenting the text as a uniform notice, the design grades it according to importance: product, origin and brand first; explanatory and distribution details afterwards.

Ornament helps to hold this abundance together. Thick borders isolate sections, while curved, scroll-like flourishes soften the geometry of the rectangular text blocks. The central yellow field acts almost as a stage for both bottle and lettering, its saturated warmth sharpened by red headings and blue accents. Although the layout is asymmetrical, it remains carefully balanced: the visual mass of the bottle on the left is answered by smaller passages of text towards the upper and lower right.

Context and significance

Advertising of this period often blurred the boundary between information and spectacle. A poster had to communicate quickly, yet it could also surround an everyday commodity with associations of refinement, reliability and abundance. Imp. Camis’s design achieves this without a narrative scene or fashionable figure. Instead, the bottle, the brand name and the claim of Algerian origin become the spectacle, amplified through scale, colour and ornamental framing.

Seen today, the poster is revealing on two levels. It is an energetic example of late nineteenth-century commercial design, notable for the way its typographic hierarchy controls a crowded composition. It is also a document of colonial consumer culture, showing how Algerian produce was packaged for a French market through polished branding and geographical prestige. The tension between decorative confidence and historical context gives the design an interest extending well beyond the drink it was created to sell.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Many of our maps and art prints are chosen as thoughtful gifts for homes, offices, studies and meaningful places.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.

We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.

Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Framed canvas and specialist cotton-rag editions are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
