Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les liliacées, Pl. 12, dated 1805, presents Ixia palludiflora as a slender, almost calligraphic presence against a warm cream ground. Five vivid red flowers gather near the upper right of the plate, their yellow throats punctuating the composition with small flashes of light. Beneath them, an attenuated green stem descends towards long, blade-like leaves, while the generous surrounding space gives every curve and branching point unusual clarity.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century study of lilies and related flowers. Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, Redouté brought together the two principal demands of botanical illustration: sufficient precision for identification and an elegance capable of sustaining attention beyond the strictly scientific. Produced during a period of intense European interest in natural history, his flower studies addressed readers and collectors as much as botanists. Plants were isolated from their habitats and arranged on the page so that structure, colour and growth could be examined without distraction.
A closer look
The composition derives much of its character from asymmetry. The flower head leans into the upper-right portion of the plate rather than occupying its centre, leaving a broad interval of pale ground to the left. This open space heightens the sense of the plant’s vertical reach: the eye begins among the blossoms, follows the fine stem downwards and comes to rest in the darker greens of the foliage. A delicate line near the left edge quietly defines the plate without competing with the specimen.
Each flower is differentiated through small shifts in angle and tone. Some blooms turn outwards, displaying their star-like arrangement of petals; others are seen obliquely, their overlapping forms producing pockets of deeper crimson. Fine veins cross the petals, while gradations from saturated red to softer pink-red lend them volume. The yellow centres are carefully shaded rather than treated as flat spots of colour, creating the impression of narrow, recessed throats.
The lower section is quieter but no less closely observed. Highlights and shadows describe the stem’s cylindrical form, and the narrow leaves rise in subtly varied greens, their edges cleanly distinguished against the background. Faint supplementary botanical forms can also be discerned towards the lower left, alongside the restrained script of the identifying caption. These peripheral details preserve the plate’s scholarly character without disturbing the commanding simplicity of the principal stem.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at the meeting point of court culture, botanical science and luxury publishing. His career encompassed the final decades of the ancien régime and the political transformations that followed, yet flowers remained his remarkably consistent subject. Among his patrons were Marie Antoinette and, later, Joséphine de Beauharnais, whose interest in horticulture formed part of a wider culture of collecting and cultivating plants from across the world.
Les liliacées demonstrates why Redouté’s work has remained so closely associated with the refinement of botanical art. The specimen is neither reduced to a diagram nor overwhelmed by ornament. Instead, accuracy and decorative rhythm reinforce one another: the leaves explain the plant’s habit of growth, the angled blossoms reveal its floral structure, and the disciplined expanse of cream around them turns a botanical record into a poised study of line, colour and proportion.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
