Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Description des plantes rares cultivees a Malmaison et a Navarre Pl.63, published in 1813, presents a flowering begonia in an arrangement at once disciplined and gently animated. The plant rises towards the right of the pale ground, its vivid pink blossoms held above a gathering of broad, deep-green leaves. Empty space to the left prevents the specimen from feeling crowded, while the curving stems and unevenly placed foliage preserve the irregularity of living growth.
The plate belongs to Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, a publication devoted to rare plants grown at two estates closely associated with Empress Joséphine. Malmaison in particular became renowned for its ambitious gardens and collections, bringing horticulture, scientific study and imperial patronage together. Redouté was exceptionally well suited to such a project: one of the most celebrated botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, he combined exact observation with luminous colour and an instinct for giving an isolated specimen a commanding presence on the page.
A closer look
The strongest concentration of colour occurs near the upper centre, where several five-part flowers open around softly yellow centres. Their petals shift from saturated rose pink towards paler highlights, giving the cluster a delicate volume without sacrificing the clarity of its structure. Smaller buds appear close to the blossoms, recording another stage in the plant’s development and lending the otherwise formal study a quiet sense of growth.
Below, the foliage provides a darker and more substantial counterweight. Fine lines describe the branching veins of the leaves, while subtle tonal changes suggest their ridged surfaces and slight folds. Some edges carry a maroon-red tint that merges gradually into the green rather than forming a hard border. The principal stem likewise changes character as it descends, passing from green into reddish brown and tapering towards the lower margin.
The asymmetry is particularly effective. Flowers, stems and leaves occupy the centre-right, but individual forms project in different directions, allowing the eye to follow the plant’s branching structure. Overlaps create a modest sense of depth: leaves sit behind one another, the flower heads advance, and slender stems remain visible through the openings between them. Along the lower edge, the cursive inscription “Begonia Erraniana” identifies the specimen in the elegant manner of a botanical plate, though the historical name need not correspond precisely to modern botanical usage.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period served more than a decorative purpose. Before colour photography, carefully observed plates provided a means of recording cultivated specimens and circulating knowledge of plants that many readers would never encounter in person. In publications devoted to rare collections, scientific legibility was therefore essential: flowers, buds, stems and foliage had to be distinguished clearly enough to support comparison and study.
Redouté’s particular achievement lies in making that clarity appear effortless. The spacious ground isolates every significant feature, yet the specimen never becomes a dry diagram. Bright blossoms, richly articulated leaves and the graceful rise of the stem turn Plate 63 into a poised botanical portrait—one in which classification and visual pleasure remain inseparable.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
