This rather unique map of the United States of America, originally published by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1949, features dozens of highly detailed illustrations of postage stamps, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s.
Most of the stamps are placed near the location that is featured on the stamp, such as the capitol building of Idaho or Yosemite National Park in northern California. There are also a few groupings, such as all the presidential stamps, and some other notable stamps around the map's edges.
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn't start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 130 inches (330cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
Please note that the 24x14 inch map has white edges that may help with framing, or you can snip them off easily if needed. All other maps, and all framed maps, are just like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this Old Political Map of the USA in 1856.
This map includes stamps such as the 100th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Edison and Dr George Washington Carver's portrait as part of the Famous American Scientists Series of 1940. Across the maps you can also spot unique stamps of other famous Americans such as Theo Roosevelt, Graham Bell and Samuel Morse.
Stamps of famous USA landmarks such as the Grand Canyon, Boulder Dam, Crater Lake, and Mount Rainier are also visible across the map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who's an avid stamp collector or someone looking for a slightly different map of the USA.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
