Two open pink blossoms occupy the upper centre, their yellow stamens held within loosely layered petals, while a closed bud, thorned stem and branching leaves trace the plant’s development beneath them. Against the unmarked, warm off-white ground, every contour remains distinct: soft petals are set against sharply serrated foliage, and the graceful upward movement of the stem is checked by small, precisely observed thorns.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for reconciling scientific description with an exceptional sense of pictorial refinement. Often called the “Raphael of flowers”, he worked at a time when botany, horticulture and the cultivation of plants from beyond Europe attracted intense scholarly and fashionable interest. His flower studies reached audiences well beyond specialist botanists: their clarity made them informative, while their spacious compositions and delicately modulated colour gave cultivated specimens the presence of formal portraits. This rose exemplifies that dual purpose, recording leaves, bud and bloom while arranging them into an image of remarkable poise.
A closer look
The composition rises from a slender stem near the lower centre, where the plant’s defensive character is especially evident. Pointed thorns project at intervals, their hard silhouettes contrasting with the softer mass of foliage above. The leaves divide into elongated, finely veined forms with subtly toothed edges. Some turn towards the light and appear fresh green; others deepen into cooler, shadowed tones, creating a layered canopy without sacrificing botanical legibility.
Above this foliage, the two flowers are similar enough to form a pair yet sufficiently varied to avoid rigid symmetry. One opens more directly towards the viewer, exposing its warm yellow centre, while the other turns slightly, allowing overlapping petals to establish a shallow sense of depth. Their pink is not uniform: it gathers more strongly along folds and outer edges before paling towards the highlighted surfaces. These gentle tonal transitions suggest the thinness and slight translucency of rose petals without making the rendering appear theatrical.
The bud at middle right provides a quieter counterpoint to the expanded blooms. Green sepals enclose the emerging pink, linking the colour of the flowers to that of the leaves and showing another stage in the plant’s cycle. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
