Pierre Joseph Redouté’s Plate 09 from Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, dated 1813, presents a cultivated botanical specimen identified in the lower inscription as “Paeonia Daunica”. A broad crimson flower crowns the composition, its rounded petals gathered around a finely articulated yellow centre. Beneath it, overlapping leaves spread in several directions, their cool and warm greens carefully modulated against an almost white ground. The plant is at once luxuriant and disciplined: abundant foliage is contained within a spacious vertical arrangement, while smaller botanical details near the lower edge extend the study beyond the immediate splendour of the bloom.

Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists working in France during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His studies united close observation with an exceptional sense of pictorial poise, giving specimens the clarity required of botanical records without sacrificing their ornamental character. This plate belonged to a publication devoted to rare plants cultivated at Malmaison and Navarre, estates closely associated with Joséphine de Beauharnais and the horticultural culture surrounding her. Such images documented plants valued for their rarity and cultivation while also addressing an audience for whom botany, collecting and refined visual culture were intimately connected.

A closer look

The principal flower occupies the upper centre, where saturated reds deepen between the folded petals and lighten along their softly curved edges. These subtle tonal changes prevent the bloom from reading as a flat emblem. Its yellow stamens form a concentrated, finely worked core, introducing a sharp contrast of colour and texture. Small irregularities in the petal contours preserve the sense of an observed living specimen rather than an idealised geometric form.

Below, the foliage provides the composition’s structural weight. Leaves overlap and turn at different angles, with prominent veins running through surfaces that shift from dark forest green to paler, yellow-tinged passages. Some project laterally, while others recede behind the central stems, creating depth without the aid of a landscape setting. The pale surrounding space is crucial: it isolates every serration, junction and change of direction, allowing the eye to follow the plant’s growth from stem to flower.

Near the bottom left, a smaller pale flower offers a quiet counterpoint to the dominant red bloom. Its elongated petals and delicate centre are rendered on a more intimate scale. At the lower right, two pod-like forms add another stage of botanical development, their faintly striated surfaces contrasting with the softness of the petals and the broad planes of the leaves. These peripheral elements are easy to overlook, yet they transform the plate from a flower portrait into a more extensive account of the specimen’s structures.

Context and significance

Early nineteenth-century botanical illustration occupied a productive space between science and art. The specimen had to be legible—its leaves, flowers and reproductive features clearly distinguished—but the plate also required compositional intelligence. Redouté’s particular distinction lies in how naturally those demands coexist. Here, the plant is neither crowded by explanatory detail nor stripped of its sensuous presence. Precise contours, restrained modelling and generous negative space make close study possible, while the concentrated red of the flower gives the page an immediate visual focus.

The result reflects a culture in which rare cultivated plants carried scientific, horticultural and social interest. Yet the plate remains compelling independently of that history: its drama is contained within the contrast between one full bloom, a dense architecture of leaves and the near-silence of the surrounding ground.
