Two flame-orange flowers rise from a slender green stem, their open forms balanced by a closed bud at the upper left. Against the warm, nearly unmarked ground, every curve of petal and leaf remains distinct. The result is vivid without being crowded: a study in which scientific clarity is inseparable from grace.
The plate belongs to a work inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s engagement with botany and the attentive study of plants. Rousseau regarded botanical observation as an accessible, absorbing way of encountering the natural world, and Redouté’s illustration translates that spirit into visual form. Among the most admired botanical draughtsmen of his age, Redouté combined close observation with an exceptional instinct for arrangement. His flowers are informative, yet never reduced to diagrams; they retain the freshness and individuality of living plants.
A closer look
The two blooms occupy the centre of the sheet but turn in subtly different directions, allowing the structure of the lily to be understood from more than one angle. Their petals curl back in broad, tapering arcs, shifting from clear orange to yellow and deeper russet tones towards the interiors. Fine speckling punctuates the surfaces, while darker recesses between the petals give the flowers a convincing sense of volume. Delicate outlines hold each form in place without making it appear rigid.
Above them, the unopened bud introduces another stage in the plant’s development. Its compact shape contrasts with the expansive flowers below and prevents the upright composition from becoming too symmetrical. The stem bends and twists slightly as it rises, creating a gentle rhythm through the plate. Long green leaves emerge at measured intervals, their smooth contours sharpened by finely described veins and quiet tonal variations from cool green to warmer olive.
Redouté makes particularly effective use of empty space. The pale cream-beige field isolates the plant from any suggestion of habitat, directing attention towards its anatomy, colour and pattern of growth. It also clarifies the spaces between the blossoms: each petal can be followed to its edge, even where one flower overlaps the other. Faint inscriptions along the lower margin remain visually subordinate, preserving the specimen’s commanding central presence.
Context and significance
Botanical publishing in the early nineteenth century stood at a fruitful meeting point between natural history, education and cultivated taste. Illustrations needed to communicate recognisable plant structures, but they were also valued for compositional refinement. Redouté became especially associated with this union of accuracy and elegance. Here, the lily is carefully observed without losing its ornamental force: the branching stem provides a lucid botanical framework, while the intense orange blossoms create an almost heraldic display.
The plate rewards both kinds of looking. From a distance, it is an arresting arrangement of warm flowers, cool foliage and spacious ground. Closer inspection reveals the minute speckles, leaf veins, shaded folds and changing petal edges through which Redouté gives the specimen its presence. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
