The plate belongs to a period in which botanical publishing flourished alongside aristocratic horticultural collecting. Malmaison and Navarre were associated with Joséphine de Beauharnais, whose cultivated estates became celebrated for their rare and newly introduced plants. Redouté’s role in recording such specimens brought together two complementary traditions: botanical illustration as a means of careful study, and flower painting as an art of exceptional refinement. His reputation rests partly on this ability to make scientific clarity feel graceful rather than merely diagrammatic.
A closer look
The principal stem enters from below and divides as it climbs, directing the eye through a loose sequence of leaves rather than a rigidly symmetrical arrangement. Some leaves stretch out almost horizontally; others turn upward or cross behind neighbouring forms. Their shapes are long and narrow, but not mechanically repeated. Small shifts in angle, contour and tone distinguish one from another, while fine veins and subtly lightened edges give the foliage a crisp, observed character.
The richest concentration of botanical information lies towards the lower right. Here, two rounded buds sit beside open floral structures, where numerous fine yellow stamens emerge from pale centres. Their clustered delicacy contrasts with the smoother, more substantial leaves above. The restrained palette is especially effective: deep and mid greens are set against light brown, cream and muted yellow, with soft tonal transitions preserving detail without introducing dramatic shadow.
Redouté also includes supplementary studies near the lower-left area of the plate. Lightly drawn floral components and sectional details shift the emphasis from the plant’s overall silhouette to its internal construction. These quieter elements can easily be missed at first glance, yet they clarify the plate’s dual purpose as both an elegant composition and a record for close botanical examination. Beneath the specimen, the flowing inscription “Eucalyptus diversifolia” acts as a visual counterweight to the branching foliage above.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
