The specimen stands almost alone against a pale ground, its narrow green stem and finely textured foliage leading the eye upwards to the concentrated colour above. A smaller flowering offshoot at the lower right interrupts the otherwise poised symmetry, introducing a gentle sense of growth and variation.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists working in early nineteenth-century France. Celebrated for flower studies that combined close natural observation with unusual compositional refinement, he belonged to a tradition in which botanical illustration served both scientific and aesthetic purposes. Plants had to be rendered clearly enough to communicate their structure, yet Redouté’s plates possess the balance, spaciousness and delicacy of independent works of art. Here, the Erica is not crowded by surrounding vegetation or elaborate scenery: it is given the page to itself, allowing its branching habit, buds, leaves and open flowers to be read with exceptional clarity.
A closer look
The brightest passage occupies the upper centre, where vivid pink flowers gather into a compact head. Their forms are individually delineated rather than dissolved into a single mass, with subtle shifts from deeper rose to paler pink giving the cluster volume. Small yellow centres punctuate the blossoms, while faint linear details within the petals reward closer inspection. The overall effect is crisp but not rigid; restrained tonal gradations soften the outlines and suggest the slight curvature of each flower.
Beneath this floral crown, the plant narrows dramatically. Fine green leaves cling closely to the central stem, creating an almost feathery texture against the open background. Tiny buds lower down record different stages of development, an important feature in an illustration concerned with more than the plant’s most showy moment. The secondary cluster at the lower right echoes the principal flowers on a reduced scale, balancing the composition without disturbing its upward momentum.
The surrounding emptiness is integral to the plate. Rather than treating the pale field as unused space, Redouté employs it to isolate every contour and branching point. At the lower left are faint subsidiary studies of floral structures, while the name ‘Erica’ appears in elegant script at the bottom centre. A small inscription reading ‘P. J. Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
