Continuer la lecturePublished in 1995 using original survey data from 1956, the “Westport Quadrangle” is a finely detailed United States Geological Survey topographic map of the Washington coast at the mouth of Grays Harbor. At the 1:24,000 scale, it captures Westport and its surrounding coastal landscape with the precision that made USGS quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, mariners, field scientists, and local authorities. The map’s blue waters and green land tints immediately distinguish harbor, channels, wetlands, and settled areas, while contour lines articulate the subtle relief of a low coastal environment. It is both a navigational document and a historical snapshot, preserving the mid-twentieth-century geography of a working harbor town later reissued for modern reference.
The United States Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became one of the great cartographic institutions of the modern era, charged with mapping the nation’s terrain and assessing its natural resources. Its quadrangle maps are admired for their standardized clarity: measured grids, crisp lettering, hydrographic precision, and a disciplined visual hierarchy in which every road, shoreline, stream, and elevation mark has purpose. In the “Westport Quadrangle,” that scientific language is applied to a region where land and water interlock in especially dynamic fashion. The result is a map that conveys not only where things are, but how the coastal terrain functions—through tidal channels, river mouths, beaches, lowlands, and built corridors.
Westport itself occupies a strategic position on the southern side of Grays Harbor, one of Washington’s most important coastal estuaries. The map shows the town in relation to the harbor entrance, the South Channel, North Channel, and the broad waters shaped by the meeting of riverine and Pacific forces. The Chehalis River, draining a large portion of southwestern Washington, gives this harbor its inland connection and ecological significance. Around these waters are small streams, lakes, marshy margins, and coastal features that make the quadrangle unusually rich in hydrographic detail. For collectors interested in maritime communities, fishing economies, and Pacific Northwest settlement, the map offers a concentrated portrait of a coast shaped by commerce and tide.
Among the most evocative landmarks is Gray’s Harbor Lighthouse, an enduring coastal beacon associated with navigation, maritime safety, and the development of Westport as a seaward-facing community. Westhaven State Park also appears within this mapped landscape, linking the town to dunes, beach access, and the recreational identity that would become increasingly important in the later twentieth century. Protection Island and the harbor channels help frame the geography of shelter and exposure: protected anchorage on one side, the open Pacific nearby. The map’s contouring is subtle but meaningful, revealing low elevations, shoreline transitions, and the delicate topographic distinctions that matter greatly in coastal planning, flooding, road placement, and habitat management.
As a historical document, the “Westport Quadrangle” is especially compelling because it records a coastal area in a period of evolving land use. The 1956 survey data preserve the arrangement of roads, neighborhoods, harbor facilities, natural features, and open lands before decades of subsequent development, environmental regulation, and shifting waterfront economies. Comparing this map with later views would illuminate changes in urban expansion, shoreline management, parkland, and infrastructure around Grays Harbor. Yet even on its own, it stands as an elegant example of USGS topographic cartography: restrained, information-rich, and deeply practical. For admirers of Washington history, coastal geography, and authoritative American mapmaking, it offers a beautifully ordered view of a complex Pacific Northwest shore.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
