Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Description des plantes rares cultivees a Malmaison et a Navarre Pl.04, published in 1813, presents Metrosideros saligna as a single, elegantly isolated branch. Slender brown stems carry elongated green leaves and small pale flower clusters, while reddish-green shoots at the upper right mark the plant’s newest growth. Set slightly off-centre against an open cream ground, the specimen acquires a gentle upward movement without sacrificing the clarity expected of a botanical study.
The plate belongs to Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, a publication devoted to rare plants grown at the residences associated with Empress Joséphine. Malmaison in particular became renowned for its ambitious horticultural collections, assembled during a period when plants were moving across continents through scientific expeditions, imperial networks and international exchange. Redouté’s role was to give these prized specimens an enduring visual record, uniting close botanical observation with the compositional refinement for which he became celebrated.
A closer look
The plant is allowed to occupy the page with remarkable freedom. Rather than arranging the branch as a rigid diagram, Redouté follows its natural divisions: one stem rises towards the fresh foliage at the upper right, while smaller offshoots spread leaves and blossoms across the central field. The surrounding negative space keeps every silhouette legible, from the tapering tips of the leaves to the fine branching of the flower clusters.
Within the foliage, subtle tonal shifts prevent the greens from appearing uniform. Darker passages gather near the central veins and where leaves overlap, while softened highlights suggest their smooth surfaces and slight curvature. Fine veins run through the elongated blades, and small areas of shadow beneath them create just enough depth to distinguish one layer from another. The warm brown stems form a restrained linear framework beneath this cooler range of greens.
The flower clusters reward closer attention. Their tiny pale forms are articulated through delicate speckling and minute touches of colour rather than heavy outlines, giving them an airy texture beside the more substantial leaves. At the top of the branch, reddish tips gradually pass into green, recording the visual difference between tender new growth and mature foliage. Beneath the specimen, the label “Metrosideros Saligna” anchors the composition in the classificatory language of botanical publication.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration served several audiences at once. It supported the study and identification of plants, documented specimens that might flower only briefly, and offered cultivated readers a carefully ordered view of an expanding natural world. His plates are distinguished by the ease with which these scientific and aesthetic functions coexist: structural information remains lucid, yet the plant never feels reduced to a schematic example.
This study is especially characteristic of that balance. Its restrained background and precise labelling belong to the conventions of botanical documentation, while the asymmetrical spread of the branch gives the subject poise and rhythm. What begins as a record of Metrosideros saligna becomes, through Redouté’s control of line, spacing and nuanced colour, a portrait of the plant as an individual living form.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
