Continuer la lecturePublished in 1983 from 1982 survey data, the US Geological Survey’s “Sayner” presents a finely resolved portrait of northern Wisconsin’s lake country at 1:24,000 scale. Centered on the populated place of Sayner, the map captures a landscape where settlement, forest, water, and roadways are closely interwoven. Its title is elegantly spare, typical of USGS quadrangles, yet the map itself is rich with local detail: Harbor Lake, Germain Lake, surrounding waterways, wooded tracts, and the approaches into the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. The result is both a practical topographic document and a historical snapshot of a region defined by recreation, forestry, conservation, and the quiet geography of Wisconsin’s Northwoods.
The US Geological Survey, founded in the late nineteenth century, became one of America’s most consequential scientific mapping institutions, producing the authoritative topographic framework by which much of the nation was studied, managed, and understood. Maps such as “Sayner” reflect the USGS commitment to precision: roads, trails, shorelines, contours, wetlands, and cultural features are arranged with disciplined clarity. Beyond navigation, this kind of mapping supported land management, environmental planning, hydrological study, and resource conservation. In a region dominated by forests and lakes, such details mattered deeply, helping document access routes, drainage patterns, elevation changes, and the relationship between human settlement and the surrounding natural systems.
The visual language of the map is classic modern USGS topography. Blue identifies the lakes, streams, marshy margins, and watercourses that structure the Sayner landscape, while greens distinguish forested areas and public lands. Brown contour lines trace the subtle undulations of the terrain, showing the low hills, shallow valleys, and glacially shaped rises characteristic of northern Wisconsin. The varied greens lend depth and legibility, allowing the viewer to read the landscape almost intuitively. This careful color hierarchy makes the map especially engaging: it is not merely a diagram of place, but a layered visual record of elevation, vegetation, hydrology, and human passage.
Sayner lies within a landscape shaped by ice, water, and forest. The many lakes shown on the map—among them Harbor Lake and Germain Lake—belong to a broader Northwoods pattern of glacial basins, kettle lakes, wetlands, and gently rolling terrain. Roads and trails thread between these waters, linking cabins, forest routes, recreation areas, and small communities. The presence of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest gives the map particular historical resonance, reflecting Wisconsin’s long commitment to forest conservation, public recreation, and the preservation of lake-rich wilderness. Here, topography becomes a record of both natural inheritance and human stewardship.
As a document of the early 1980s, “Sayner” also offers a valuable benchmark for studying change over time. The survey data may reveal patterns of development around lakeshores, the extent of forest cover, the layout of local roads, and the balance between settlement and conserved land at a moment when northern Wisconsin was increasingly shaped by recreation and environmental awareness. For collectors, historians, and admirers of American cartography, the map is compelling precisely because of this dual character: scientifically exact yet evocative, regional yet deeply specific. It preserves Sayner not as an abstraction, but as a living landscape of woods, waters, trails, and memory.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 1983 from 1982 survey data, the US Geological Survey’s “Sayner” presents a finely resolved portrait of northern Wisconsin’s lake country at 1:24,000 scale.
