Continuer la lectureBelle of Nelson old fashion hand made sour mash whiskey, created by the American firm Wells & Hope Co. in 1882, turns a whiskey advertisement into an elaborate theatrical scene. Beneath the emphatic headline “BELLE OF NELSON / HAND MADE SOUR MASH WHISKEY”, a richly dressed man presents a decorative vessel to two seated women. Burnished orange, deep red and brown dominate the composition, while cream and muted green soften the ornate interior behind them. The bottle itself appears almost discreetly on a small table at the lower right, embedded within a broader fantasy of luxury, ceremony and sociability.
The label belongs to a period when American producers increasingly relied on distinctive graphic identities to separate their goods in a competitive market. Ornamental borders, memorable names and narrative illustrations allowed packaging to communicate qualities that could not be conveyed through lettering alone. Here, the claims of “hand made” and “sour mash” are accompanied by an atmosphere of cultivated indulgence. Sour mash refers to a method in which material from an earlier fermentation is used in a subsequent batch, helping to maintain consistent conditions; in the advertisement, that technical language is reframed as evidence of established craft and tradition.
A closer look
The composition is built around the standing figure in the central foreground. His patterned garments and elaborate headdress distinguish him sharply from the softer background, while the vessel in his hand creates a visual link with the seated women beside him. Their pale skin and warmly highlighted clothing stand out against the cooler, more muted architecture. Rather than arranging the figures in a rigid line, Wells & Hope Co. overlaps bodies, furniture and decorative objects, producing a surprisingly layered space for a commercial design.
At the upper left, further female figures emerge only partially from the interior, their indistinct treatment extending the scene beyond its principal group. Arches, patterned walls and ornamental architectural details contribute to the sense of a staged, opulent setting. Underfoot, a densely coloured carpet supplies another field of pattern, echoing the varied textiles worn by the figures. These accumulated surfaces—fabric, wall decoration, carpet and border—make visual abundance part of the brand’s appeal.
The typography imposes order on this crowded imagery. The brand name occupies the top centre in large, commanding letters, while the lower inscription identifies the producer and place: “DISTILLED BY THE BELLE OF NELSON DISTILLERY CO. / LOUISVILLE, KY.” A floral border encloses both text and scene, making the design read as a unified trade label rather than a freestanding illustration. The graphic hierarchy is clear: name first, seductive spectacle second, and manufacturing identity anchored firmly at the base.
Context and significance
Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising often combined practical information with decorative display. Before the streamlined logos and simplified packaging of later commercial design, labels could operate as miniature pictorial worlds, densely filled with figures, architecture and ornamental lettering. The exoticised, theatrical setting used here reflects an advertising language that associated distant or imagined cultures with splendour and pleasurable escape. Its purpose was less to describe where the whiskey was made—the lower text clearly locates the distillery in Louisville—than to surround an American product with an aura of distinction.
Wells & Hope Co.’s design is therefore compelling not simply as a record of a particular brand, but as an example of how nineteenth-century advertising constructed identity through spectacle. Close attention reveals a carefully managed balance between commercial clarity and visual excess: the whiskey bottle may be small, yet every colour, flourish and figure serves the larger work of making its name memorable.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
