Step into the vibrant world of 1930s America with “Montana,” an original pictorial map created by the renowned Ruth Taylor White in 1935. This captivating work is a visual celebration of Montana’s vast landscapes and rich cultural heritage, rendered in a style that is as whimsical as it is informative. The map’s original title, simply “Montana,” reflects its focus on the state’s unique identity, inviting viewers to explore its counties, natural wonders, and storied past through a tapestry of color and illustration. White’s artistry transforms the map into a lively narrative, where each region bursts with character and historical significance.
Ruth Taylor White, celebrated for her series of pictorial state maps, brings a distinctive charm and wit to her cartographic creations. Her work stands out for its playful, cartoon-like illustrations that capture both the spirit and the stereotypes of the era. In “Montana,” White’s hand is evident in every detail, from the animated cowboys herding cattle across the plains to the proud depiction of Native American figures and motifs that honor the state’s indigenous heritage. Her maps were designed not only to inform but also to delight, making them cherished collectibles for those who appreciate both artistry and history.
The map’s design is a feast for the eyes, employing vibrant colors and bold lines to delineate Montana’s counties and highlight its most iconic features. The sweeping Rocky Mountains are rendered with dramatic flair, their peaks rising above scenes of bustling mining camps and serene forests. To the north and south, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park are illustrated with particular reverence, underscoring their importance as national treasures and natural wonders. The Missouri River winds gracefully across the map, a lifeline threading through prairies and towns alike.
Beyond its geographical accuracy, “Montana” serves as a window into the state’s economic and social life during the early twentieth century. The illustrations teem with references to ranching, mining, agriculture, and timber—industries that shaped Montana’s development and identity. Wildlife such as bears, bison, and deer roam freely across the landscape, while scenes of wheat fields and farmsteads evoke the region’s agricultural abundance. The Great Plains are depicted with sweeping prairie imagery, contrasting beautifully with the forested mountain regions and river valleys.
Cities and towns, from Billings and Missoula to Great Falls and Bozeman, are carefully marked, each serving as a gateway to the surrounding wilderness and culture. The map’s lively vignettes and meticulous labeling bring these communities to life, situating them within a broader tableau of historical landmarks, natural beauty, and frontier spirit. “Montana” by Ruth Taylor White is more than a map—it is a work of art and a historical document, offering a rare and enchanting glimpse into the character of the Treasure State as seen through the eyes of one of America’s most imaginative cartographers.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
