Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Gallica Stapeliae Flora (1817–1824) presents a Gallic rose (Rosa gallica) in full, extravagant bloom. Its layered pink petals open around a closely worked golden centre, while a slender stem, serrated leaves and tightly furled buds give the specimen both botanical structure and compositional grace. Against the pale, unencumbered ground, the flower appears almost suspended: richly coloured yet precisely observed, with every fold, vein and contour allowed its own space.
Created in 1817 and associated with Redouté’s celebrated rose studies of 1817–24, the work belongs to a period in which botanical illustration served scientific enquiry while also appealing to a growing taste for horticulture and flower painting. Redouté was especially admired for reconciling these two demands. His plants are clear enough to be studied, but never reduced to diagrams; their individual habits of growth remain central to their appeal. Working in Paris across years of profound political change, he enjoyed the patronage of successive courtly and imperial circles and became one of the defining botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
A closer look
The composition is organised around the broad central rose, whose outer petals spread into an irregular, softly scalloped silhouette. Pink deepens within the folds and towards the heart of the flower, while paler highlights along the curling edges give the bloom a convincing sense of volume. At its centre, a concentrated field of yellow stamens provides the sharpest warm accent, its fine stippled texture contrasting with the smooth tonal transitions of the petals.
Below, the foliage introduces a darker and more angular rhythm. The leaves branch outward in compact groups, their pointed tips and sharply articulated serrations offsetting the rounded flower above. Fine veins pass through surfaces of muted and deep green, while restrained shading distinguishes one overlapping leaf from another. These are not generic decorative leaves: their structure has been carefully differentiated, lending the study the descriptive clarity expected of serious botanical work.
The smaller buds are particularly revealing. One rises at the upper right, its yellow-green sepals enclosing petals that have not yet opened; another, placed close to the right edge, provides a quieter counterweight to the large bloom. Their delicate, slightly downy appearance introduces another texture and allows several stages of growth to coexist on a single stem. The French caption, “Rosier de Provins à fleurs de Stapolie”, anchors the otherwise airy arrangement in the language of botanical identification.
Context and significance
Redouté’s fame rests not simply on accuracy, but on his ability to turn the isolated specimen into a compelling pictorial presence. The generous blank ground removes the rose from any garden setting, concentrating attention on its morphology: open flower, emerging buds, leaf clusters and branching stem. Yet the arrangement avoids the stiffness of a specimen sheet. Its slight asymmetries and gently rising lines retain the appearance of natural growth.
The date range in the title corresponds to the publication period of Les Roses, Redouté’s great survey of cultivated and wild roses. Such works emerged from a culture in which gardens, plant collecting and botanical classification were closely intertwined. Here that history is distilled into one poised branch: a study at once instructive and decorative, distinguished by the tension between the flower’s luxuriant abundance and the disciplined precision with which it has been recorded.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
