Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 109, published in 1827, presents the cultivated tulip Tulipa culta as a solitary botanical specimen of unusual splendour. Rising through a generous field of warm cream, the flower opens into a dense, irregular crown of pink and yellow petals. Their curling edges and streaked colour give the bloom an almost flame-like movement, while the upright stem and broad green leaves provide a calm, structural counterweight.
Redouté was among the most admired flower painters of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for combining close botanical observation with an instinct for elegant composition. His flower books belonged to a culture in which botanical illustration served several audiences at once: scientists could study the defining structures of a plant, gardeners could encounter prized cultivated varieties, and collectors could appreciate each plate as a decorative image. In Choix des plus belles fleurs, that balance is especially assured. The tulip remains clearly described, yet its isolation and poise lend it the presence of a formal portrait.
A closer look
The blossom occupies the upper centre of the composition, its layered petals turning in different directions rather than forming a simple symmetrical cup. Rose-pink passages deepen towards some folds and edges, while ribbons of clear yellow appear between them. Smooth tonal transitions model the petals without heaviness, suggesting both their glossy surface and the slight translucency of their thinner margins. Near the centre, overlapping forms create concentrated depth; farther out, the petal tips loosen into finer, more animated contours.
Below the flower, the slender stem bends almost imperceptibly, preventing the vertical arrangement from becoming rigid. Two expansive leaves rise around it in long, tapering arcs. Their cool, varied greens temper the warmer bloom, and fine veins run through their surfaces with quiet precision. One leaf overlaps the stem while another turns slightly away, allowing the plant to be understood spatially as well as decoratively. Redouté’s restraint is crucial here: with no garden setting, pot or additional specimen, every curve of leaf and stalk becomes significant.
The pale ground gives the tulip ample breathing room and concentrates attention on its silhouette. At the lower edge, the labels “Tulipe cultivée (Variété)” and “Tulipa culta” identify the subject in French and botanical Latin. Their delicate lettering forms a discreet scholarly base beneath the more sensuous display above—a reminder that the plate was designed to inform as well as delight.
Context and significance
Tulips carried a particular fascination for European horticulture because cultivated varieties could produce remarkable changes in colour, pattern and petal form. Redouté’s specimen is not treated as a generic emblem of spring: its striped colouring, complex bloom and individual leaf structure are made central to the study. The image reflects an era of intense enthusiasm for illustrated flower books, when the classification and cultivation of plants were closely entwined with connoisseurship.
Redouté’s distinctive achievement lay in preserving scientific clarity without sacrificing visual grace. In this plate, accuracy is carried by the articulate stem, veining and growth habit; ornament resides in the bloom’s restless pink-and-yellow folds. The result rewards both distant viewing, where the flower reads as a bold vertical arabesque, and close attention, where subtle shifts of colour and contour reveal the cultivated tulip’s singular character.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
