WeiterlesenPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les Liliacées, Pl. 44, published in 1805, presents the common hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) as both a living plant and an object of close botanical study. A slender stem carries a compact cluster of purple flowers above long, blade-like leaves, while the exposed bulb and roots bring the plant’s usually hidden structure into view. Set against an unbroken pale ground, the specimen acquires an almost architectural clarity: leaves rise, overlap and curve outwards, directing the eye towards the richly coloured flower spike.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated Les Liliacées, a series devoted to lilies and related plants that appeared between 1805 and 1816. Working in France at a time of intense interest in natural history and cultivated gardens, Redouté helped establish a form of botanical art in which scientific description and visual refinement were mutually reinforcing. His flowers are precisely differentiated, yet never reduced to dry diagrams. Here, the hyacinth’s recognisable garden presence is balanced by an exacting account of its leaves, stem, individual florets and subterranean bulb.
A closer look
The composition is vertical but not rigid. At the lower centre, deep green leaves emerge in a close group before separating into distinct, flowing contours. Some remain upright beside the flower stem; others lean and arc away, introducing asymmetry without disturbing the plate’s sense of balance. Fine veins and gradual tonal changes prevent these broad leaves from appearing flat, while their darker greens form a cool foil to the lighter violet and mauve of the flowers.
At the top of the stem, the hyacinth’s many small blossoms are treated individually rather than as a single mass. Petals curl and open in slightly different directions, creating a lively edge around the cluster. Subtle shifts from deeper purple to paler highlights articulate the folded surfaces of each flower. The stem itself bends gently rather than following an exact central axis, a small natural irregularity that gives the specimen a convincing sense of growth.
The bulb at the lower right provides a second focal point. Its rounded form, papery outer layers and fine roots contrast with the smooth leaves above, extending the study from flower to foundation. Labels placed along the lower edge include “Hyacinthus orientalis, Var. decumbens” and “Hyacinthus orientale, Var. redolentum”. Such naming anchors the graceful arrangement within the classificatory purpose of botanical illustration, while the abundant negative space ensures that every contour remains legible.
Context and significance
Redouté became closely associated with the refined flower painting of early nineteenth-century France, producing studies admired for their accuracy as well as their compositional poise. His career flourished within a culture in which botany, horticulture and collecting were increasingly interconnected. Plants cultivated for rarity, fragrance or ornamental appeal could also become subjects of systematic comparison and publication; botanical plates allowed their identifying structures to be studied beyond the garden itself.
This hyacinth exemplifies Redouté’s ability to reconcile those different ways of looking. The exposed roots, labelled varieties and carefully observed veins belong to the language of natural history, while the ascending rhythm of green leaves and purple flowers gives the plant an independent pictorial elegance. Nothing distracts from the specimen, yet the plate never feels merely clinical: its interest lies in the poised meeting of classification, cultivation and attentive observation.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
