August Macke’s Zoological Garden I, painted in 1912, turns a visit to the zoo into a dense, buoyant arrangement of animals, visitors and foliage. A vivid blue parrot commands the central foreground, its yellow beak and layered plumage set against green leaves, while the antlered head of a deer enters from the lower left. Behind them, lightly dressed figures move through a setting alive with emerald, orange, yellow and deep blue. The scene remains recognisable, yet colour and simplified form give it an expressive order quite distinct from straightforward observation.

Macke was a leading figure in Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based group associated with some of the most adventurous developments in German Expressionism. Everyday modern life—promenades, gardens, shops and places of public leisure—offered him subjects through which colour could become an organising force in its own right. Here, the zoological garden is both a familiar social space and an unusually rich visual environment: human figures, exotic birds, branching antlers, railings and vegetation can be arranged into a rhythmic field of contrasting shapes.

A closer look

The parrot provides the painting’s strongest chromatic anchor. Its body is built from several shades of blue rather than a single flat tone, with lighter accents suggesting the shifting surface of feathers. The sharply contrasting yellow beak punctuates this cool mass, while the surrounding greens partially absorb the bird into its leafy setting. Nearby, flashes of orange among the smaller birds enliven the upper right, creating a dispersed counterpoint to the concentrated blue at the centre.

At the lower left, the deer introduces a different visual language. Warm browns and golden yellows describe its head, while the outward-reaching antlers form a branching pattern against the crowded scene. Macke does not isolate the animal as a formal specimen; instead, it is cropped by the edge and woven into the larger composition. This partial view contributes to the sense of looking into a busy enclosure where no single element can be taken in at once.

Depth is created less through strict perspective than through overlapping planes. The clearly articulated foreground animals give way to softer figures in pale clothing and hats, then to densely worked trees in the upper part of the painting. A dark fence at the right adds a firm graphic structure amid the more fluid foliage. Further back, the curved neck of a pale long-legged bird introduces an elegant, slender line, momentarily interrupting the abundance of blocky colour and thick vegetation.

Context and significance

Made during a particularly fertile period in Macke’s brief career, Zoological Garden I reflects his engagement with the wider European avant-garde while retaining the clarity and accessibility of an observed scene. Unlike Expressionist works centred on psychological strain or urban unease, Macke’s paintings often approach modern experience through harmony, leisure and colour. The zoo was especially suited to this sensibility: it brought metropolitan visitors into close proximity with unfamiliar animals, while offering a setting filled with movement, spectacle and decorative variety.

What distinguishes this composition is the balance between visual abundance and careful control. Bright colour, emphatic outlines and visible brushwork generate energy, but the painting never dissolves into confusion. Animals, people and plants remain legible even as they interlock. The result is a scene that rewards both an immediate response to its cheerful palette and slower attention to the subtle correspondences between feather, foliage, clothing and fence.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
