A slender, gently turning stem carries several open flowers, their layered white petals modelled with the faintest blushes of pink and grey. Against the pale, spacious ground, every botanical feature remains distinct: yellow stamens glimmer at the centre of the blossoms, serrated leaves gather below, and a succession of buds rises towards the upper right.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the early nineteenth century, admired for combining botanical precision with an exceptionally refined sense of composition. Roses, orchids and ornamental plants became his particular domain. His celebrated flower studies appeared at a time when botany attracted both scientific enquiry and fashionable enthusiasm: illustrated plant books served as records of classification and cultivation, while their elegance made them highly prized objects in their own right. Here, close observation never feels merely diagrammatic. The specimen has been arranged with the balance and measured rhythm of a floral portrait.
A closer look
The largest blooms occupy the central and upper portions of the composition. Although predominantly white, they are not left as blank shapes. Subtle tonal shifts separate one petal from the next, giving the corollas volume while preserving their luminous delicacy. Some petals curl loosely outwards; others cluster more densely around the yellow centres. This variation keeps the flowers natural in appearance and prevents their repeated forms from becoming overly symmetrical.
Below them, the foliage supplies a stronger register of colour and structure. The greens range from fresh yellow-green to deeper, cooler tones, with prominent veins and finely toothed edges lending each leaf a distinct profile. Several pointed thorns interrupt the smooth central stem. These small, sharply defined details provide a useful counterpoint to the softness above: rough stem against silken petal, angular leaf against rounded flower.
The buds at the upper right record successive stages of growth, from tightly closed forms to partially opening flowers. Their touches of pink form a restrained accent within the otherwise white-and-green palette and lead the eye upwards through the arrangement. Overlapping leaves and blossoms introduce a shallow sense of depth, yet the uncluttered background maintains the clarity expected of a botanical plate. At the bottom, the French caption reads “Rosier Campanulé à fleurs blanches”, identifying the subject as a bell-shaped rose with white flowers.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
