Advertising Poster for Beer, created by an anonymous designer around 1898, turns the act of drinking into a cheerful outdoor performance. At its centre, a smiling man in a boldly checked suit holds up a bottle and glass; beside him, a seated woman enjoys her own drink, while a young cyclist approaches with a vivid pink flower. Warm yellows, oranges and browns envelop the group, punctuated by fresh greens and crisp passages of white. Rather than isolating the advertised beverage, the poster associates it with sociability, fine weather and fashionable leisure.

By the end of the nineteenth century, commercial posters had become a conspicuous part of urban visual culture. Advances in lithographic production enabled advertisers to combine strong colour, decorative drawing and memorable characters on a scale suited to public display. Beverage companies were particularly well served by this new graphic language: a bottle could be promoted not merely as a commodity, but as the centre of an appealing social scene. Here, persuasive design operates through mood and narrative. The anonymous artist presents refreshment as part of an easy, convivial way of life, reflecting the growing sophistication of advertising at the turn of the century.

A closer look

The composition is arranged asymmetrically around the standing man, whose patterned jacket immediately commands attention. Its dark criss-cross lines create a busy graphic texture against the lighter ground, while his bow tie and broad smile lend him the air of an enthusiastic host. Bottle and glass are held prominently yet naturally, integrated into the gesture rather than displayed as a static still life. Small highlights across the glass suggest its reflective surface, sharpening the focus on the drink without interrupting the scene’s relaxed character.

At the lower left, the seated woman provides a quieter counterweight. Her pale coat and elaborate hat stand out against the surrounding amber and brown tones; a decorative feather gives the silhouette an additional flourish. Even her closely laced boots receive careful attention, evidence of the poster’s interest in contemporary dress as part of the appeal. The table and beer glass anchor this side of the design, placing consumption within a recognisable social setting rather than presenting it abstractly.

Movement enters from the lower right. The young girl, dressed in a white blouse and dark skirt, reaches forward with a bright flower while positioned beside a black tandem bicycle. Its frame, tyres and pedals form a network of fine dark lines that contrasts with the softer shapes of clothing and foliage. Behind the figures, porch posts, a railing and delicate flowering branches establish a garden or domestic terrace. Stone and grass meet along the lower edge, while the tightly cropped arrangement keeps the three figures close together. These layered details make the scene feel observed in passing, as though a moment of outdoor recreation has been briefly interrupted for a toast.

Context and significance

The poster belongs to a period in which advertising was becoming increasingly pictorial. Dense explanation could be replaced by an instantly legible combination of colour, character and atmosphere, designed to attract attention before its message was fully read. The warm palette and polished lithographic finish give this example the immediacy required of public advertising, while its fashionable clothes, bicycle and garden setting broaden the promise of the beverage into one of modern recreation.

Its anonymous authorship is typical of much surviving commercial art, where the commissioned message often took precedence over the identity of the designer. Yet the image remains highly individual: part social vignette, part product promotion, it records the moment when persuasive graphic design was learning to sell not only beer, but the convivial world imagined around it.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
