The portrait format and tight crop intensify their proximity, while strong diagonals carry the eye through a composition that feels at once intimate and energetically compressed.
Painted during the final, highly inventive phase of Macke’s short career, Two Girls belongs to the experimental world of German Expressionism. Macke was a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based circle that sought alternatives to naturalistic representation through heightened colour, rhythmic structure and simplified form. His work often found its subjects in everyday modern life, yet transformed them through colour into self-contained pictorial harmonies. Here, the ordinary motif of two young figures becomes a mosaic-like arrangement in which affection, clothing and surroundings are bound together by the same bright visual rhythm.
A closer look
The girls dominate the central foreground, their bodies defined less by conventional modelling than by broad areas of colour. The blonde hair of the figure on the left is built from light, feathery strokes, standing out against darker passages nearby. Her blue apron or dress answers the cool tones scattered through the background, while the red clothing of her companion provides the composition’s most concentrated note of warmth. Subtle variations within that red prevent it from reading as a single flat block, giving the garment a painterly density without sacrificing the clarity of its shape.
Behind the pair, recognisable space gives way to a lively screen of intersecting forms. Sharp-edged areas of blue and yellow press forward alongside softer, more irregular passages, producing depth through overlap rather than through a traditionally receding perspective. Dark indigo anchors the brighter colours, and flashes of orange, purple and green keep the surrounding field in motion. The result is spatially ambiguous: the figures clearly inhabit a setting, yet that setting also operates as pattern.
Near the lower edge, loosely described floral forms introduce smaller, more intricate accents. They are not isolated as a formal still life, but woven into the broader patchwork of the painting. This is characteristic of the work’s visual logic: no element remains entirely separate. Hair, fabric, flowers and background shapes share the same active brushwork, allowing the embrace to emerge from — rather than simply sit before — the surrounding colour.

Macke’s particular contribution was often more lyrical than confrontational. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
