The title identifies the composition as a stained-glass design for the façade of the Fouquet boutique, placing it within the fruitful meeting of art, architecture and commerce that characterised European decorative culture. Mucha, a Czech artist closely associated with Art Nouveau, became renowned for bringing sinuous line, stylised natural forms and graceful female figures into posters, interiors and applied design. Here, ornament is not secondary to the portrait: it determines the entire structure, turning the human profile into part of a larger, carefully integrated pattern.
A closer look
The woman faces towards the left, her gaze calm and slightly lowered. Crisp contours trace her forehead, nose, lips and neck, while subtler tonal shifts give the face a softness distinct from the denser decoration around it. Her hair falls in long, curving strands, moving from greenish tones into deeper shadow. This sweeping mass anchors the profile and creates a fluid counterweight to the intricate geometry of the headdress above.
Across the upper part of the composition, red beads and green details form an ornate lattice of floral and geometric elements. Small fringe-like pendants hang along its lower edge, introducing a delicate downward rhythm and a suggestion of movement. Bright highlights on the beadwork create points of brilliance, while the layered ornaments overlap one another to produce depth despite the design’s predominantly flat, graphic character.
The neckline is treated with equal care. A sequence of small blue motifs is threaded among rich red beads, creating a cool accent within the warmer palette. Fine lines along the neck and clothing prevent these decorative passages from becoming visually heavy. Around everything, the circular boundary quietly contains the profusion of detail: the eye moves from the face to the headdress, down through the jewellery and back along the curve of the hair.

Art Nouveau sought to dissolve conventional boundaries between the fine and applied arts, extending visual invention into shopfronts, furnishings, typography and architectural decoration. A design intended for stained glass was therefore not merely an illustration transferred to another setting; it had to function as part of a façade, with strong contours and clearly differentiated fields of colour capable of holding their effect at an architectural scale.
Mucha’s composition answers that challenge through its compact, circular organisation and emphatic colour contrasts. The pale pink ground leaves the silhouette immediately legible, while the saturated reds and greens concentrate attention around the woman’s head and shoulders. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
