Snaps, created in 1911 by the Belgian artist Lith. Ratinckx, places an imposing, white-bearded drinker at the centre of a vigorously coloured advertisement for oude genever. Wearing a dark cap and pale blue shirt, the man raises a clear stemmed glass with an air of solemn concentration. His weathered face and carefully modelled hand stand out against a deep green ground, while flashes of red and emphatic white lettering give the vertically arranged composition its commercial force.

The poster belongs to an era in which lithography brought bold colour and ambitious illustration into streets, cafés and shopfronts. Genever, a juniper-flavoured spirit long associated with the Low Countries, provided the subject for a particularly characterful form of beverage advertising: one built not simply around the bottle, but around recognisable types, expressive faces and suggestions of tradition. Here, the wording “Oude Genever” and “Vieux Système” stresses age and established method, while the compact title “SNAPS” delivers the immediate graphic impact required of a public advertisement.

A closer look

The bearded figure dominates the foreground, filling much of the available space. Fine creases around his eyes and across his brow give his expression a vivid specificity; he appears to be inspecting, smelling or preparing to taste the drink rather than merely displaying it. Highlights along the rim and bowl of the glass make its transparency legible against the darker setting. Beneath the beard, a concentrated patch of shadow strengthens the head’s sculptural presence, while softer tonal transitions describe the folds of the light blue shirt.

Colour is organised in broad, forceful contrasts. The textured green background establishes a dense visual field, interrupted by warmer red passages and the paler tones of the man’s face, beard and clothing. A suggestion of brickwork adds a modest sense of setting without competing with the figure. Although much of the design depends on flat areas of colour, the face and hand are treated with more gradual shading; this contrast allows the human subject to advance from the poster’s decorative surface.

Typography encloses the figure as firmly as the graphic border. “SNAPS” appears prominently across the upper section in bold white capitals, immediately readable from a distance. Lower down, “Oude Genever” adopts a darker, more ornamental character, while “Vieux Système” runs along the left in stylised lettering. These changes of scale, direction and type style do more than convey information: they animate the margins and lead the eye around the drinker, from title to glass and then towards the product description.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century commercial posters often balanced instant recognition with considerable illustrative detail. Snaps does precisely that. Its restricted but potent palette, large lettering and dominant silhouette communicate quickly, yet closer inspection reveals reflections in the glass, wrinkles in the sitter’s face and subtle changes of tone in his clothing. Lithography was particularly suited to this union of strong graphic design and nuanced modelling, enabling colourful advertising imagery to circulate before a broad public.

The poster’s appeal lies in the tension between modern promotion and cultivated old-fashionedness. Its design is direct, colourful and made to command attention, but its bearded protagonist and references to “old” genever and an older system lend the drink an air of inherited knowledge. Ratinckx turns that contrast into a memorable character study: a beverage advertisement in which the scrutinising drinker is every bit as compelling as the words surrounding him.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
