Mounted figures pass through a landscape built from broad greens, cool blues and sudden passages of red, orange and yellow. Trees and foliage remain recognisable, yet their forms loosen into overlapping patches and emphatic contours, so that the forest appears to shift around the riders as they move. Rather than unfolding as a detailed narrative, the scene is held together by colour, rhythm and the compressed energy of its brushwork.
The painting belongs to the mature phase of Macke’s brief career and to a decisive period in German Expressionism. As a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based avant-garde association, Macke participated in a wider rethinking of how colour and form might operate independently of naturalistic description. His own paintings often retained the familiar world—figures walking, riding, shopping or gathering outdoors—while transforming it through simplified shapes and bright, interlocking hues. Made only a year before his death in 1914, Reiter im Wald demonstrates the distinctive balance he achieved between legible figuration and decorative abstraction.
A closer look
The mounted figures sit slightly away from the centre, an asymmetry that encourages the eye to follow their progress across the composition. Their bodies and horses are reduced to compact, angular shapes, defined in places by dark outlines that stand clearly against the crowded woodland. Quick marks along a horse’s mane sharpen the impression of motion, while the riders’ cooler blue tones briefly separate them from the warmer colour gathering behind.
The surrounding forest is not treated as a continuous, conventionally modelled space. On the right, a substantial tree in deep green and blue acts almost like a framing device, while the upper branches merge into similarly coloured forms near the sky. Across the background, red and orange foliage creates a warm, flickering field. These colours are interspersed rather than smoothly blended, producing the sensation of light broken by leaves without describing every branch or patch of sunlight.
Closer to the lower edge, green ground rises unevenly towards the riders, establishing just enough terrain to support the scene. Elsewhere, depth emerges through overlap: foreground forms press against softer middle-ground colour, which in turn meets the dense foliage beyond. Visible strokes and layered patches keep the surface active. The result is spatially convincing but never fully settled; forest, horses and figures seem to participate in the same continuous pulse of colour.
Context and significance
Der Blaue Reiter brought together artists who rejected academic naturalism in favour of more subjective and structurally adventurous uses of colour. Macke shared that experimental outlook, but his art often differed in temperament from the more visionary or mystical work associated with some members of the group. His subjects frequently came from modern leisure and everyday life, and even here, amid the wooded setting, the recognisable activity of riding remains the composition’s anchor.
What gives Reiter im Wald its particular force is this tension between observation and transformation. The riders remain present enough to suggest a fleeting encounter in nature, yet the forest around them has become a near-abstract mosaic of warm and cool forms. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
