Orange Bitter Notermans, created by Belgian artist Auguste Bénard in 1900, turns the serving of a drink into a compact theatrical scene....

Orange Bitter Notermans, created by Belgian artist Auguste Bénard in 1900, turns the serving of a drink into a compact theatrical scene. At the centre, a woman in a white bonnet carefully pours from the advertised bottle while a second woman, crisply dressed in white and marked by a black bow, watches from behind. Warm orange dominates the design, checked by areas of cool green, soft beige and emphatic black lettering. The result is both convivial and commercially direct: the product is embedded in an everyday social encounter yet remains unmistakably the focus.

The poster belongs to a period in which advertising was becoming an increasingly sophisticated branch of graphic art. Around the turn of the twentieth century, bold colour, memorable figures and carefully ordered typography enabled commercial messages to command attention in busy public settings. Bénard’s design reflects that development. Rather than isolating the bottle as a still-life object, he gives it a role within a lively human exchange, combining practical branding with the decorative clarity associated with contemporary lithographic poster design.

A closer look

The composition is organised around the diagonal action of pouring. The bonneted woman leans towards a green table in the lower left, bringing bottle and glass into close visual alignment. Her pale clothing is articulated with subtle hatching and darker contours, while a checked skirt introduces a small but effective field of pattern. The green tabletop acts as a cool platform for the drink, making the amber-orange accents around it appear particularly vivid.

Immediately above, the second woman’s dark bow provides one of the sharpest tonal accents in the poster. Her attentive pose helps direct the eye back towards the bottle, while the overlapping figures create a modest sense of depth within an otherwise deliberately flat graphic arrangement. In the upper right, a partly obscured man appears to play a musical instrument, extending the scene beyond a simple product demonstration and suggesting the bustle of a social gathering. The background remains pale and loosely defined, allowing these foreground gestures to retain their clarity.

Lettering supplies the design’s strongest structural counterweight. The name “ORANGE BITTER NOTERMANS HASSLET” is displayed prominently, with the smaller French instruction “EVITEZ LES IMITATIONS” beneath it. This warning to avoid imitations does more than add information: it reinforces the brand’s claimed distinctiveness and reveals an advertising world already concerned with recognition, competition and authenticity. Bénard’s visible signature in the upper left is integrated into the surrounding design rather than competing with the commercial message.

Context and significance

As a beverage advertisement, Orange Bitter Notermans demonstrates how turn-of-the-century posters blurred the boundary between salesmanship and illustration. Its message depends upon a clear hierarchy: first the warm palette and animated figures, then the act of pouring, and finally the product name and slogan. Broad areas of colour make the design legible at a glance, while details such as the bottle label, pleated clothing, checked fabric and poised glass reward closer attention.

What gives the poster its enduring visual character is this balance between immediacy and anecdote. It communicates quickly, as advertising must, but Bénard also supplies enough gesture, costume and social interaction to make the scene feel observed rather than merely assembled. The orange, green and cream palette binds image and lettering together, preserving the lively decorative presence of an era when the modern consumer poster was becoming a distinctive form of public art.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
