Titled “Greenville,” this United States Geological Survey topographic map presents the Taylorsville and Indian Valley country of Plumas County, California, as surveyed...

Titled “Greenville,” this United States Geological Survey topographic map presents the Taylorsville and Indian Valley country of Plumas County, California, as surveyed in 1950 and issued with a 1964 imprint. At a scale of 1:62,500, it offers a richly detailed mid-century portrait of a mountain landscape shaped by rivers, forests, ranchlands, and small settlements. Taylorsville appears as a principal point of focus, with Greenville nearby lending its name to the quadrangle. The map captures a region poised between the intimacy of rural community life and the grandeur of the northern Sierra Nevada, where roads, trails, watercourses, and relief are rendered with the precision and clarity that made USGS cartography indispensable to scientists, engineers, travelers, and land managers.

The US Geological Survey brought to this map its distinctive visual language: fine contour lines describing every rise and hollow, carefully labeled elevations, stippled and shaded vegetation, and a disciplined hierarchy of roads, streams, and place names. The effect is both technical and elegant, allowing the eye to read the land almost as if from above. Hills and ridges gather around the valleys in close, rhythmic lines, while the flatter floors of Indian Valley open into gentler spaces of settlement and agriculture. Water bodies such as Bayliss Reservoir, along with the network of creeks and drainage lines, reveal how deeply the region’s human geography depended upon the underlying structure of the landscape.

Taylorsville and Greenville sit within one of the most evocative interior valleys of northeastern California, a place historically tied to mining, timber, ranching, and the movement of people through the Sierra and Cascade borderlands. Indian Valley itself forms a natural basin amid forested mountains, its towns connected by modest roads and local routes that speak to mid-century patterns of travel before later expansion and realignment. The North Fork Feather River and its tributaries lend the map a sense of motion, threading through canyons and lowlands while shaping settlement and access. Around them, unnamed peaks, wooded slopes, and upland divides create a richly textured record of terrain that was as economically important as it was visually dramatic.

The map is especially compelling as a historical document of land use and environmental conditions in the decades after World War II. Its roads and trails trace the practical geography of ranchers, foresters, hunters, surveyors, and residents moving through a landscape still defined by small towns and natural barriers. Portions of national forest land reflect the federal presence in managing timber, watersheds, recreation, and conservation across the region. The cartography quietly preserves the relationship between cultivated valley floors and surrounding wildlands, showing where human occupation gathered and where the mountains retained their density and remoteness. Compared with the present day, it offers a revealing snapshot of development, access, and settlement before later infrastructural and environmental changes.

As a piece of American topographic cartography, “Greenville” combines scientific authority with a strong sense of place. It invites close study: the sweep of Indian Valley, the placement of Taylorsville, the surrounding forests, the clustered roads, the reservoirs, and the innumerable contours that translate rugged terrain into graphic form. The USGS style is restrained yet deeply expressive, allowing the landscape itself to provide the drama. For collectors drawn to California history, Sierra Nevada geography, or the practical beauty of mid-century survey work, this map offers more than location; it offers an encounter with a particular moment in the life of a mountain valley, recorded with remarkable care and enduring cartographic grace.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
