Titled “The Natural North America,” DUFRENOY’s 1905 wall map is the first known rendering of the continent in the Arabic language, a landmark of geographic knowledge translated across cultures. Conceived for educational and public display, it distills the immensity of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Greenland into a lucid portrait of landforms and waters. Every feature is labeled in Arabic, inviting readers to explore a new hemisphere in a familiar script. The composition privileges physical geography—mountain chains, river systems, valleys, and plains—over political boundaries, yet it never loses sight of human orientation, guiding the viewer with clear symbols, orderly place-names, and an elegant, balanced layout that makes the continent instantly legible.

Color is the map’s grammar. Vibrant tones differentiate rugged mountains from lowland flats, arid stretches from watered river basins, and upland plateaus from deep-cut valleys. The Appalachians and Rockies emerge as parallel spines; the Sierra Madre arcs through Mexico; the Canadian Shield and Great Plains read as sweeping fields of hue. Major waterways—the Mississippi–Missouri, St. Lawrence, Colorado, and Rio Grande among them—thread the sheet, converging on coastal estuaries and the inland seas of the Great Lakes. By translating relief, drainage, and forested regions into a calibrated palette, DUFRENOY turns topography into a narrative, showing how rivers carve, mountains divide, and prairies connect the continent’s great physiographic provinces up to the ice-bound north of Greenland.
