Published in 1946, the United States Geological Survey’s “Boston North” presents the northern approaches to Boston at a scale of 1:31,680, with Melrose, Massachusetts, near the heart of its densely observed landscape. The map belongs to the USGS topographical tradition: precise, measured, and rich with practical intelligence, yet visually elegant in its layering of terrain, settlement, water, and transportation. Its contour lines and subtle tonal distinctions give the hills and valleys around Melrose a palpable dimensionality, while streets, rail lines, ponds, parks, and town boundaries reveal a region poised between urban expansion and older New England geography. It is a compelling mid-century portrait of Greater Boston just as postwar growth was beginning to reshape its suburbs.

The United States Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became one of the great cartographic institutions of the modern era, charged with mapping the nation’s landforms, mineral resources, watersheds, and evolving built environment. In maps such as “Boston North,” that scientific mission becomes a remarkably detailed visual record of everyday geography. Rather than merely naming places, the USGS captures their physical relationships: the rise of a ridge, the curve of a river, the placement of a rail corridor, the edge of a pond, the density of a street grid. This map demonstrates the agency’s distinctive ability to combine engineering accuracy with geographic storytelling, making the landscape legible at both regional and neighborhood scales.

Melrose is shown amid a constellation of North Shore and inner-suburban communities, including Malden, Everett, Saugus, Lynn, Wakefield, Stoneham, and Revere. The map records an area deeply tied to Boston yet possessing its own intricate local identity, formed by commuter routes, industrial corridors, residential streets, and pockets of preserved open land. Boston Harbor appears to the southeast, anchoring the broader metropolitan setting, while the Mystic River system helps define the watery lowlands and transportation routes threading through the region. Local roads and rail lines knit together the towns, showing the infrastructure that supported daily movement before the dominance of the interstate age, with Route 1 standing out among the principal north–south arteries.

The topographic character of the sheet is especially vivid around Melrose, where the terrain rises toward the wooded uplands of the Middlesex Fells. Fells Reservation, Spot Pond, Bellevue Pond, and Pine Banks Park offer a striking counterpoint to the surrounding urban fabric, their contours and shorelines lending the map a rhythm of hill, basin, woodland, and settlement. The contour shading and color gradients enrich the reading of elevation, allowing the viewer to see how roads bend around slopes, how ponds occupy glacial hollows, and how neighborhoods gather in more accommodating terrain. This is not a flat city plan, but a nuanced portrait of a landscape whose natural form continued to shape suburban development.

As a 1946 document, “Boston North” captures Greater Boston at a revealing historical moment. The Second World War had just ended, automobile ownership was rising, and suburban land use was beginning to intensify across communities such as Melrose, Wakefield, Saugus, and Stoneham. Many roads, rail lines, industrial edges, and residential patterns shown here would later be altered by highway construction, commercial development, and metropolitan expansion, including corridors eventually transformed by expressways such as Interstate 93. The map therefore preserves an earlier geography: compact town centers, rail-oriented movement, undeveloped tracts near the Fells, and a closer visual relationship between city and countryside. It is both a scientific survey and a graceful time capsule of mid-century Massachusetts.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
