Published as “Langley,” this US Geological Survey topographical map presents the southern reaches of Whidbey Island and its surrounding waters with the disciplined clarity of mid-century American cartography. The map is dated 1956 and carries a 1969 imprint, capturing a landscape surveyed in the postwar era and issued at a time when Washington’s coastal communities were increasingly shaped by mobility, recreation, and suburban growth. At 1:24,000 scale, it renders Langley, Washington, not merely as a town, but as the center of a finely observed terrain of shorelines, roads, beaches, bays, slopes, and wooded uplands. The original title has a pleasing simplicity, yet the map itself is richly layered, balancing scientific precision with the quiet drama of Puget Sound geography.

The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, brought to this map the institutional authority that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, land managers, hikers, planners, and historians. Its standard symbols and restrained color scheme reflect a cartographic language designed for use in the field: contour lines for elevation, blue for water, black and red for cultural features, and subtle tints to distinguish land cover and terrain. This was practical mapping at its most elegant, created not for ornament but for exact understanding. Yet that very precision gives the map its visual appeal. Every road, shoreline indentation, and contour interval contributes to a portrait of Langley and Whidbey Island as they stood in the middle decades of the twentieth century.

The topographic character of the region is one of the map’s great attractions. Whidbey Island is not shown as a flat coastal strip, but as a landscape of ridges, slopes, bluffs, kettled ground, and descending contours that meet the waters of Saratoga Passage, Admiralty Inlet, Useless Bay, and surrounding coves. Cliffs and elevated areas are indicated with the familiar elegance of USGS contouring, allowing the eye to read the rise and fall of the land almost instinctively. Features such as Kettles Pass, Deer Lake, Mud Bay, and nearby shorelines reveal a terrain shaped by glacial action, tidal movement, and maritime exposure. The map captures the dynamic meeting of land and water that defines the island’s enduring beauty.

Langley appears as the primary settlement, set within a broader constellation of Whidbey Island communities and coastal landmarks, including Freeland, Maxwelton Beach, Greenbank, East Point, Picnic Point, and Public Harbor. The surrounding waters are equally important to the composition: Saratoga Passage forms a maritime corridor, while Useless Bay and Admiralty Inlet emphasize the island’s relationship to Puget Sound and the routes that have long connected its communities. Roads both major and minor thread through the terrain, linking beaches, inland lakes, farms, and residential clusters. The map quietly records a world in transition, where older rural patterns coexisted with expanding access, leisure travel, and the growing appeal of waterfront living.

As a historical document, “Langley” offers a valuable mid-century snapshot of land use, infrastructure, settlement, and natural form in one of Washington’s most distinctive island landscapes. The 1956 date places it in an era when postwar development was beginning to reshape many Pacific Northwest communities, while the 1969 imprint suggests its continued usefulness during a period of increasing regional growth. Comparing this mapped landscape with the modern island reveals changes in roads, subdivisions, shoreline development, and recreational use, while also highlighting the persistence of bays, passages, bluffs, and wooded uplands. It is a map of practical geography, but also of memory: a measured, authoritative record of Langley and Whidbey Island before the full acceleration of contemporary coastal development.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
