Alphonse Mucha’s Lygie, created in 1901, centres an elongated female figure within an intricate framework of flowers, curving bands and repeating ornament. Her folded arms and gently averted gaze introduce a note of introspection, while the sinuous fall of her gown and hair gives the composition its characteristic upward rhythm. Soft pinks and pale greens emerge against warm beige, creating a muted harmony in which figure, lettering and decoration appear conceived as parts of a single design.

Made at the height of Mucha’s influence, Lygie belongs to the ornamental visual culture of the Belle Époque and to the flourishing of Art Nouveau across European graphic design. The Czech artist had become closely associated with highly stylised female figures framed by botanical motifs, elaborate contours and carefully integrated typography. Such imagery occupied a fertile territory between fine art and commercial design: posters and decorative prints could be immediately legible from a distance, yet reward close inspection with a density of pattern and line. The title evokes Ligeia, or a related heroine from classical tradition, lending the figure an atmosphere of grace and mystery without tying the design to a detailed narrative scene.

A closer look

Lygie dominates the vertical format, her body forming a calm central axis. The arms are crossed loosely rather than held in a theatrical gesture, and pale shadows around them give a subtle sense of volume against the flatter background. Fine lines articulate the sleeves and folds of her clothing, suggesting movement without disturbing the overall stillness. Around her face, strands of hair mingle visually with blossoms and curling stems, making it difficult to say precisely where the human figure ends and the decorative setting begins.

Behind her head is a large circular motif filled with layered floral forms. It functions almost like an ornamental medallion, concentrating detail in the upper part of the design and balancing the long descent of the figure below. Additional floral elements occupy the upper corners and outer edges, while a narrow decorative band near the bottom echoes the motifs above. Mucha avoids conventional pictorial depth: instead, overlapping contours and changes in tonal intensity create a shallow, carefully organised space.

The typography forms part of this structure rather than an afterthought. The emphatic title, “LYGIE”, anchors the lower edge, set against a lighter field for clarity. Beneath it appears the French wording “REPRODUCTION des œuvres décoratives de Mucha”. The lettering’s measured spacing and stylised forms correspond with the surrounding curves, allowing text and illustration to share the same ornamental language. This unity of type, border and figure is one of the design’s most characteristic Art Nouveau features.

Context and significance

Mucha became one of the defining figures of turn-of-the-century illustration and poster design, helping to establish a visual vocabulary that was both modern and richly decorative. His women are rarely presented in ordinary settings; instead, they occupy emblematic spaces of flowers, arabesques and circular frameworks. In Lygie, the contemplative pose distinguishes the subject from the more overtly theatrical or promotional figures associated with poster art. Her presence is restrained, almost statuesque, while the surrounding ornament supplies movement.

The enduring interest of the design lies in this balance between graphic clarity and elaborate detail. From a distance, the pale figure and circular floral surround read as a strong, unified silhouette. Viewed more closely, smaller correspondences emerge: the echo between petals and hair, the recurrence of curved lines in sleeves and borders, and the gentle alternation of pink, green and cream. Lygie is therefore not simply a portrait-like figure, but a complete decorative arrangement in which every element contributes to the same flowing cadence.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the undefined version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
