Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s La Passion d’Edmond Haraucourt. Drame sacré en six parties, musique de Jean Sébastien Bach, designed in 1904, places a solemn figure of Christ at the centre of an unusually concentrated theatrical poster. Long-haired and bearded, he faces directly outwards, his pale robe emerging against a circular, stained-glass-like field. In one delicately articulated hand he holds the crown of thorns. Deep red flowers, repeated foliage and warm bands of ornament frame the figure, giving the composition the formal gravity of a devotional image while retaining the flowing decorative language associated with Mucha’s Art Nouveau designs.
The poster advertised Edmond Haraucourt’s sacred drama in six parts, accompanied by music by Johann Sebastian Bach. It belongs to a period in which the illustrated poster had become one of the most conspicuous forms of European visual culture, bringing ambitious design into theatres, streets and other public spaces. Mucha, a Czech artist whose career became closely identified with Belle Époque Paris, was particularly adept at dissolving the boundary between publicity and decorative art. Here, however, the familiar elegance of his line is made quieter and more ceremonial, answering the religious subject through symmetry, frontal presentation and a palette of muted, earthen colour.
A closer look
The figure’s direct gaze anchors the entire design. Rather than placing Christ within a narrative scene, Mucha isolates him against an emblematic background, compressing the drama into pose, expression and attribute. The white robe falls in broad, softly shaded folds, standing out from surrounding browns, ochres and subdued greens. Fine curls articulate the hair and beard, while the hands are rendered with particular care; the sharp, irregular points of the crown of thorns provide a small but forceful contrast to the figure’s composed bearing.
Behind the head, a circular arrangement of coloured segments resembles stained glass or a halo enlarged into an architectural motif. Its radial structure strengthens the poster’s symmetry and creates a shallow sense of depth within an otherwise deliberately flattened design. Dark crimson flowers gather around the figure like a second frame, their petals shaded rather than reduced to simple silhouettes. Repeated leaves extend the movement towards the upper corners, while faint stars appear lower down, introducing a restrained celestial note without disturbing the poster’s calm visual order.
Typography forms part of this carefully staged hierarchy. “LA PASSION d’Edmond Haraucourt” occupies the upper section, while “MUSIQUE de JEAN SÉBASTIEN BACH” is given emphatic space below. The substantial serif lettering counterbalances the intricate floral border and the slender contours of the figure. Along the left margin, Mucha’s signature is absorbed into the ornament rather than detached from it—a characteristic instance of lettering, illustration and border being treated as parts of a single graphic composition.
Context and significance
Mucha’s best-known posters often centre on graceful female figures encircled by flowers, arabesques and elaborate halos. La Passion employs related devices but redirects them towards sacred theatre. The frontal figure, radial background and near-symmetrical floral enclosure recall the visual authority of religious panels and stained glass, yet the bold title and credits clearly retain the work’s public, promotional purpose. That combination is central to Art Nouveau graphic design: inherited decorative forms were reorganised for modern circulation, with text and image conceived together rather than as separate elements.
The result is both announcement and icon. Its drama does not depend upon action or crowded spectacle, but upon stillness: a pale figure held within concentric ornament, red blossoms and carefully measured lettering. Among Mucha’s theatrical designs, its solemnity and restrained warmth give it a distinctive presence.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x14in (90x35cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
