The bold word “JOB” establishes the commercial message at the upper left, yet the eye is held by the woman’s languid pose and the rhythmic curves that seem to pass between hair, smoke and decoration.
The poster belongs to Mucha’s celebrated series of advertising images for Job cigarette papers and is characteristic of the Art Nouveau language he helped define in fin-de-siècle Paris. The Czech artist brought together refined draughtsmanship, stylised natural forms, emphatic lettering and intricate borders, treating promotional design with the compositional ambition of decorative art. In Job, the product is communicated indirectly but unmistakably: the woman holds a cigarette with elegant nonchalance, while the surrounding ornament transforms a fleeting curl of smoke into part of the poster’s larger visual rhythm.
A closer look
The figure’s face and hair form the principal focus. Highlights travel through the golden strands, separating individual locks before they gather into broad, looping arabesques. These curves are echoed by fine wisps around the head and shoulder, creating an almost continuous movement across the upper half of the design. Small details—a hairpin, earrings and contrasting accents within the coiffure—reward closer attention without disturbing the clarity of the silhouette.
Mucha balances this profusion of curves with a more rigid background structure. Repeated geometric motifs and an intricate border frame the woman, while flat areas of colour preserve the poster’s immediate graphic force. Warm gold, beige and brown dominate, but cooler green and purple passages prevent the palette from becoming uniformly opulent. The green lettering is particularly effective: large enough to be read instantly, it remains integrated into the decorative scheme rather than sitting apart from it.
Below the main brand name, the smaller word “PAPER” maintains the bold typographic hierarchy. Elsewhere, fine lines across the light garment suggest folds and movement, and the ornamental forms become especially dense around the lower right, where hair, shoulder and border appear to interlace. Art Nouveau sought to dissolve boundaries between fine art, illustration, typography and the designed environment. Posters were especially well suited to that ambition: they had to communicate quickly in the public spaces of the modern city, yet could also sustain remarkable decorative complexity. Mucha’s designs became closely associated with Belle Époque Paris because they combined these demands so fluently. Clear silhouettes and legible words provide immediate impact, while patterned grounds, jewellery, textiles and botanical curves encourage prolonged looking.
Job is a particularly concentrated example of that synthesis. Its commercial function is never concealed, but neither does it dictate a merely literal treatment. Brand name, cigarette, gesture and smoke are absorbed into a single ornamental system in which nearly every curve answers another. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
