The Caracas, issued by John Pinkerton in 1815, is a landmark statement of South America at the very moment Venezuela first emerged on the world stage. Among the earliest maps to register an independent Venezuela, it frames the upheaval of the revolutionary era within a finely observed geography that stretches across Venezuela and Colombia and deep into Brazil, following the Amazon and its tributaries far into the interior. Recognized in its day as one of the finest regional treatments to appear in an English atlas, it pairs political insight with scientific restraint. Borders are cleanly differentiated, terrain is richly articulated, and major waterways are traced with an authority that still feels fresh, all while an elegant cartouche confers a sense of classical dignity.

Pinkerton, the Scottish savant whose atlas set new standards in accuracy and design, drew on the latest Spanish colonial surveys, naval charts, and traveler reports to reframe a region in motion. His work was celebrated for its clarity and exactness, surpassing contemporaries such as Cary and Thomson in both engraving finesse and editorial rigor. On this sheet, political divisions are organized by a refined color system, while the physical landscape is rendered with disciplined shading. Inset indicators of latitude and longitude guide the eye with scientific poise, and an ornate cartouche at the top right anchors the composition with period taste and authority.

The political drama of the 1810s is written across the borders Pinkerton delineates. Venezuela’s nascent sovereignty is distinctly marked, set against the lingering fabric of New Granada and neighboring jurisdictions still contested or in flux. Caracas presides as the capital of a restless republic; Maracaibo and Valencia signal coastal and inland power, while Barquisimeto nods to the routes threading the interior. Across the Andes, Colombia’s Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali form a constellation of highland cities whose fortunes were tied to the revolutionary tide that would soon culminate in Gran Colombia. The map captures this hinge in time—when diplomacy, war, and geography were redrawing the northern rim of South America.

Equally compelling is the physical stage on which these events unfolded. Pinkerton models the Andean cordilleras as a muscular spine, stepping down through valleys toward the Magdalena and Cauca, while eastward the country unfurls into the Llanos, feeding the vast Orinoco system through arteries like the Meta and Apure. Lake Maracaibo gleams as both lagoon and conduit, and the Amazon’s dominion is tracked south and east with meticulous labeling of its great courses, including the Rio Negro converging near Manaus. Mountain chains, valleys, and watersheds are not merely decorative—they are explanatory, revealing how terrain channelled trade, settlement, and strategy across the region.

Cities and routes are inscribed with the certainty of Pinkerton’s hand. Caracas anchors Venezuela’s interior network; Maracaibo guards the western littoral; Valencia and Barquisimeto mark the corridors that knit uplands to coast. In Colombia, Bogotá’s plateau authority contrasts with Medellín’s basin and Cali’s passage toward the Pacific, while Manaus rises where dark waters meet, a gateway to the upper Amazon. The color-coded borders provide an immediate political reading, while the latitudinal and longitudinal indicators affirm the map’s scientific intent. As a whole, this composition distills early nineteenth-century understanding into a lucid, beautiful synthesis—an enduring reference for historians and a connoisseur’s piece for those who prize the union of art and intelligence.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). For most orders, delivery time is about 3 working days. Personalised and customised products take longer, as I have to do the personalisation and send it to you for approval, which usually takes 1 or 2 days.

All of my maps and art prints are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all orders within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks, mugs and tote bags) can take longer to make.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order we will prioritise your order and send it out by 1-day courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce).

Next Day delivery is also available in some countries (US, UK, Singapore, UAE) but please try to order early in the day so that we can get it sent out on time.

My standard frame is a gallery style black ash hardwood frame. It is simple and quite modern looking. My standard frame is around 20mm (0.8in) wide.

I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) for the frame glass. It's lighter and safer than glass - and it looks better, as the reflectivity is lower.

Six standard frame colours are available for free (black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white and antique gold). Custom framing and mounting/matting is available if you're looking for something else.

Most maps, art and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte (not shiny) cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced box wood frame, and then 'float' the piece within a wood frame. The end result is quite beautiful, and there's no glazing to get in the way.

All frames are provided "ready to hang", with either a string or brackets on the back. Very large frames will have heavy duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.

I source original, rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on acid-free archival matte (not glossy) paper that feels very high quality and almost like card. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/200gsm. It's perfect for framing.

I print with Epson ultrachrome giclée UV fade resistant pigment inks - some of the best inks you can find.

I can also make maps on canvas, cotton rag and other exotic materials.

Map ageing

I have been asked hundreds of times over the years by customers if they could buy a map that looks even older.

Well, now you can, by selecting Aged before you add a map to your basket.

All the product photos you see on this page show the map in its Original form. This is what the map looks like today.

If you select Aged, I will age your map by hand, using a special and unique process developed through years of studying old maps, talking to researchers to understand the chemistry of aging paper, and of course... lots of practice!

If you're unsure, stick to the Original colour of the map. If you want something a bit darker and older looking, go for Aged.
