Seguir leyendoPublished in 1968 from survey data gathered in 1953, the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Everett” captures a richly detailed mid-century portrait of Snohomish County and the north Puget Sound hinterland. Centered on Everett and Snohomish, the map extends across a varied landscape of river valleys, lakes, forested uplands, and growing communities. At a scale of 1:62,500, it balances regional scope with impressive local detail, allowing roads, waterways, settlements, and elevation changes to be read together as a coherent geographic story. The map belongs to the USGS tradition of precise topographic cartography, in which scientific measurement and visual clarity combine to document not only terrain, but also the evolving human imprint upon it.
The design is classically topographic, with contour lines articulating the rise and fall of the land in measured intervals, transforming the sheet into a subtle relief portrait of western Washington. Green shading marks wooded and vegetated areas, emphasizing the region’s still-dominant forest cover, while blue traces the intricate hydrology of rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Around Everett, Lake Stevens, Marysville, and Snohomish, the interplay between settlement and landscape is especially evident: towns cluster along transport corridors and river bottoms, while less developed tracts stretch toward the uplands. The map’s color language is restrained yet highly informative, inviting close study of both natural systems and the expanding infrastructure of the postwar Pacific Northwest.
Water gives this map much of its character. The Snohomish River winds prominently through the lowlands, joined by the Pilchuck River near Snohomish, while the Stillaguamish River appears to the north as part of the broader drainage network shaping the county. Lakes punctuate the landscape, including Lake Stevens, Silver Lake, Lake Serene, and Cattail Lake, each anchoring nearby roads, settlements, or forested margins. These waterways were vital to the region’s ecology, settlement patterns, agriculture, logging, and transportation history. Seen through the USGS lens, they are not merely scenic features but structuring forces, explaining why communities developed where they did and how movement through the area followed the contours of land and water.
The map also records a period of transition in Snohomish County, when rural, timber, and agricultural landscapes were increasingly connected to suburban and industrial growth. Everett, long associated with lumber, shipping, and manufacturing, appears as the principal urban center, while Snohomish, Marysville, Lake Stevens, Bothell, and Granite Falls mark a constellation of smaller communities tied together by roads and river valleys. Highway 2, Highway 9, and State Route 522 help reveal the mid-century transportation framework that would guide later development. Numerous smaller roads and trails thread into forested areas, hinting at logging access, rural homesteads, recreation, and the gradual opening of upland terrain to wider use.
As a historical document, “Everett” offers an evocative snapshot of the region before many later transformations in population, land use, and infrastructure. The forests, wetlands, lakes, and river corridors shown here preserve the geographic memory of a county poised between its resource-based past and the suburban expansion that would accelerate in the decades following publication. Produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, the map reflects the agency’s meticulous standards and its national project of making the American landscape legible through disciplined cartography. For collectors, historians, and admirers of the Pacific Northwest, it is a compelling record of place: precise, atmospheric, and rich with the quiet drama of terrain.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
