Seguir leyendoPublished with a 1980 imprint from 1979 survey data, the US Geological Survey’s “Vance” captures a precise late-twentieth-century portrait of central South Carolina around Santee and the northern edge of Lake Marion. At the detailed 1:24,000 scale, the map presents the landscape with the clarity and authority characteristic of USGS quadrangles: roads picked out in red, watercourses and lake margins in blue, wooded tracts and cultivated land distinguished by subtle color, and elevation rendered through disciplined contour lines. Its title, “Vance,” anchors the sheet in the local geography, while the inclusion of Santee gives it particular interest as a record of a community poised between rural Lowcountry traditions, transportation corridors, and the recreational magnetism of Lake Marion.
The US Geological Survey brought to maps like this a combination of scientific rigor and public utility that made its quadrangles indispensable to planners, engineers, conservationists, farmers, and outdoor travelers. Founded in the nineteenth century to classify public lands and study the nation’s natural resources, the USGS developed a cartographic language that is both restrained and richly informative. On the “Vance” sheet, that language is evident in the crisp hierarchy of symbols: roads, waterways, settlement patterns, vegetation, and relief each given their proper visual weight. The result is not decorative in the conventional sense, yet it has its own quiet elegance—a map designed to be read closely, rewarding the eye with accumulating detail.
Lake Marion is among the most compelling features shown here, its broad waters shaping the human and natural geography of the region. Created as part of the Santee Cooper hydroelectric and navigation project in the twentieth century, the lake transformed this part of South Carolina, influencing settlement, recreation, ecology, and transportation. Around its margins, the map records creeks, lowlands, forested areas, and the patchwork of farmland that define the landscape beyond the shoreline. Santee’s position near this great inland waterway helps explain its later growth as a destination for fishing, boating, and travel. The map preserves a moment when these relationships between town, lake, road, and countryside were still visibly balanced.
Topographically, the “Vance” quadrangle reveals the subtlety of South Carolina terrain rather than dramatic mountain relief. Its contour lines trace modest rises, shallow valleys, drainage patterns, and the gentle undulations that govern farming, road placement, and water flow. Creeks and smaller waterways thread through wooded and agricultural areas, showing how hydrology organizes the land even where elevation changes appear slight. The distinction between forested tracts and open farmland gives the map a textured sense of use and occupation, suggesting timberland, fields, rural homesteads, and routes connecting scattered communities. For anyone interested in environmental history or land management, these details offer a nuanced record of how people worked with the natural contours of the region.
As a historical document, the map is especially valuable for the snapshot it provides of Santee and its surroundings in 1979. Since then, development tied to tourism, highways, lakeside recreation, and regional growth has altered many parts of the area. The roads shown in red, the settlement footprint of Santee, the pattern of farms and forests, and the mapped waterways together form a baseline against which later change can be understood. It is a map of practical geography, but also of memory: a measured record of a South Carolina landscape at a particular moment in its modern evolution. For collectors, it offers both cartographic precision and a quietly evocative view of place.

Detailed maps are especially rewarding at larger sizes, where names, boundaries and decorative features have more room to be appreciated. Use the close-up preview and size guide to choose the right scale for your wall.
This map looks amazing at sizes all the way up to 50in (125cm). If you are looking for a larger map, please get in touch.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this map.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, mark one meaningful place, or request one considered visual detail. See personalised map examples.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published with a 1980 imprint from 1979 survey data, the US Geological Survey’s “Vance” captures a precise late-twentieth-century portrait of central South Carolina around Santee and the northern edge of Lake Marion.
