Seguir leyendoPublished in 1944 from survey data gathered in 1943, the US Geological Survey’s “Eutawville” captures a transformative moment in the landscape of inland South Carolina. At a scale of 1:62,500, the map presents Santee, Eutawville, St. Stephen, and the country around Lake Marion with the disciplined clarity for which USGS topographic sheets are prized. Its greens and light browns distinguish wooded tracts, open fields, and subtle elevations, while blue waterways anchor the composition. The map belongs to the wartime era of intensified federal mapping, when accurate knowledge of terrain, roads, water systems, and settlement patterns served both civilian and strategic purposes. It is a portrait of the Santee region just after major hydrological change reshaped its ecology, economy, and routes of movement.
The dominant geographical presence is Lake Marion, also identified through the Santee Reservoir, one of the defining engineering and environmental features of twentieth-century South Carolina. Created as part of the Santee Cooper project, the reservoir transformed lowlands along the Santee River system into a vast inland water body, altering transportation, agriculture, timberland, and wildlife habitat. On this map, the lake is not merely a backdrop but an organizing force: roads bend toward its margins, settlements occupy higher ground, and wooded peninsulas and shorelines reveal the new relationship between land and water. Santee’s later reputation as a center for recreation, fishing, boating, and lakeside ecology is foreshadowed here in its mapped proximity to this immense reservoir.
The US Geological Survey brought to this sheet a cartographic language built on precision and understatement. Contour lines trace the modest but meaningful elevation changes of the South Carolina coastal plain, where slight rises could shape drainage, cultivation, road placement, and settlement. Forested regions are differentiated from cleared land, allowing the viewer to read not just topography but land use: farms, fields, timber, wetlands, and open corridors of travel. The color palette is practical yet elegant, with muted greens and browns giving the sheet a refined visual rhythm. Roads and highways thread between Eutawville, Santee, St. Stephen, and smaller rural communities, recording a landscape still deeply tied to agriculture and local movement.
Eutawville itself appears within a region layered with older histories of settlement, plantation agriculture, river travel, and changing rural economies. The surrounding fields and farms point to a working countryside, while wooded expanses suggest both the persistence of timberland and the limits of development in the 1940s. St. Stephen and the Forks of the River evoke the importance of waterways and crossings in shaping local geography. The Edisto River and associated drainage patterns add another natural framework, reminding the viewer that this part of South Carolina has long been defined by rivers, swamps, sandy uplands, and low relief. The map’s roads, clearings, and contours together tell a story of adaptation to terrain.
As a historical document, “Eutawville” is especially compelling because it records a region in transition during and immediately after the upheavals of World War II. Federal mapping activity expanded dramatically in this period, and USGS sheets such as this one supplied reliable information for planners, engineers, conservationists, and navigators. The map preserves the Santee area before later highway improvements, lakeside development, and recreational infrastructure further altered its appearance. Its careful depiction of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion, small farms, forested tracts, and rural settlements offers a richly textured view of a landscape balancing tradition and modernization. For collectors, it is both a precise topographic record and an evocative snapshot of South Carolina’s mid-century interior.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
