Seguir leyendoPublished in 1950 from 1901 survey work, “Chelan” is a finely detailed United States Geological Survey topographical map of one of Washington’s most dramatic lake-and-mountain landscapes. Centered on the country around Manson, Chelan, and Lake Chelan, it captures the region at a moment when scientific mapping was becoming essential to settlement, transportation, land management, and resource assessment in the American West. The 1:125,000 scale allows the eye to move from broad regional structure to local detail: lakeshores, river valleys, section lines, roads, trails, and upland terrain all appear within a single disciplined cartographic frame. As a historical document, it offers a compelling early twentieth-century view of a landscape that would later become closely associated with recreation, orchards, tourism, and conservation.
The map was produced by the United States Geological Survey, the federal scientific agency founded in 1879 to classify public lands and investigate the nation’s geology, water, minerals, and natural hazards. USGS maps of this period are admired for their restrained precision: they translate rugged terrain into a legible system of contours, drainage lines, symbols, and surveyed divisions. Here, that language is especially effective, because the Chelan country is defined by abrupt changes in elevation and by the powerful presence of water. The contour lines sweep around ridges, tighten across steep slopes, and open into gentler basins, giving the viewer an immediate sense of the physical forces shaping the land. It is a map made not merely to locate places, but to understand them.
Lake Chelan is the commanding feature, a long, narrow body of water set within a sharply carved valley on the eastern flank of the Cascade region. Known for its exceptional depth and striking mountain scenery, the lake gives the map both structure and drama. Manson appears along its shore, positioned in relation to the lake’s coves, slopes, and surrounding routes, while Chelan occupies its strategic place near the outlet and the Chelan River. The cartography makes clear why this setting became so attractive: water access, elevated viewpoints, protected shorelands, and routes into the surrounding hills all converge here. The lake is not shown as a mere scenic backdrop, but as the organizing axis of local settlement and movement.
Beyond the lakeshore, the map opens into a varied world of rivers, ridges, surveyed land, roads, and trails. The Chelan River and Entiat River systems help define the terrain, cutting through a landscape of uplands and unnamed mountain masses. Land sections and surveyed areas indicate the administrative grid advancing across a complex natural environment, while roads and trails reveal the human pathways threading between valleys, farms, timberlands, and high country. The unnamed peaks and ranges are particularly evocative, suggesting both the limits of settlement and the enduring dominance of the Cascade foothills. In this way, the map balances two stories: the measured confidence of federal surveying and the rugged intricacy of a landscape not easily subdued.
As a historical view, “Chelan” invites comparison with the modern region: infrastructure has expanded, communities have grown, recreation has intensified, and environmental pressures have altered how people understand and manage the lake and surrounding lands. Yet the fundamental geography remains powerfully recognizable. The steep contours, branching drainages, and imposing lake basin still explain the patterns of travel, habitation, agriculture, and leisure that define the area today. This map preserves the geographical understanding of the early twentieth century, before many later transformations were fully inscribed on the land. It is at once scientific, utilitarian, and quietly beautiful—a cartographic portrait of north-central Washington in which every contour line contributes to a larger sense of place.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 1950 from 1901 survey work, “Chelan” is a finely detailed United States Geological Survey topographical map of one of Washington’s most dramatic lake-and-mountain landscapes.
